As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Wallace has built a distinguished career in medical laboratory technology, marked by decades of service, leadership and mentorship at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Most recently, she served as a medical technologist at the hospital from 1983 to 2017 and again between 2019 and 2023, returning after her initial retirement to provide critical expertise during a period of heightened need. In this capacity, Ms. Wallace was responsible for collecting specimens and maintaining detailed logs for electrophoresis testing, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of monoclonal protein and light chain disease identification. Her meticulous approach included organizing specimens according to load lists, verifying their suitability for testing and preparing them for batch analysis. Ms. Wallace also played a pivotal role in training technicians and medical fellows in the immunology department on the intricacies of electrophoresis.
Having begun her tenure at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County as a phlebotomist and laboratory worker under a grant position, before advancing to the role of generalist, Ms. Wallace gained experience in hematology, urinalysis, coagulation and clinical chemistry. For the first two decades, she served as lead technician, guiding her colleagues through significant technological transitions, such as the adoption of automated urinalysis instruments, their principles and methodology. Ms. Wallace's ability to instruct and support others became a hallmark of her career, earning her respect among peers and recognition from physicians who valued her expertise in electrophoresis.
For the second half of her career, which spanned another 20 years, Ms. Wallace specialized in immunology, focusing on serum protein electrophoresis, urine protein electrophoresis and the testing of fecal occult blood for colon cancer. Her depth of knowledge in these areas established her as an expert within the field and contributed significantly to patient care at one of Chicago's largest public hospitals.
Ms. Wallace's academic foundation was laid at Governors State University in University Park, Illinois, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in medical technology and from Malcolm X College where she earned an Associate of Science in medical laboratory technology. She also holds certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, further underscoring her qualifications in the field of laboratory science.
Active in her professional community, Ms. Wallace is a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, reflecting her commitment to excellence. She is also an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, a collegiate black Greek letter organization founded in November of 1922, which is a part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, an organization whose creed of service, scholarship, and sisterhood/brotherhood sets the tone for enhancement and giving back to the world and to our communities as needed.
Ms. Wallace has received various accolades. Among her most notable efforts was spearheading a three-year campaign to secure an honorary street sign in Chicago commemorating Dr. Lydia Eudora Ashburne M. D., one of the first black woman to graduate from the college of medicine at Howard University. A member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., she opened the very first southside office of United Cerebral Palsy, and most importantly she was the daughter of former slaves. The successful unveiling took place in October 2024, marking a personal milestone for Ms. Wallace and a lasting tribute to African American history.
Eager for the future, Ms. Wallace will begin serving as an adjunct professor at Malcolm X College starting in August 2025, marking this as a full circle accomplishment. In this new role, she will continue to share her knowledge with future generations of health care professionals, emphasizing not only technical proficiency but also compassion and empathy when interacting with patients. Ms. Wallace's legacy has been defined by expertise, service and an unwavering dedication to uplifting those around her through education and advocacy.
