A seasoned professional with over two decades of experience, Mr. Mayhew has served as the senior vice president of process and commercialization at Debut Biotechnology, a San Diego biotechnology company pioneering clinically backed functional cosmetic ingredients and formulated products, since 2022. In this role, he focuses on enhancing the productivity of microbial strains and downstream process operations through scale-relevant process development and global manufacturing partner management.

Mr. Mayhew's career is marked by his ability to navigate the complexities of scaling up processes, a challenge he refers to as the "manufacturing valley of death." This phase involves achieving the necessary volumes for economies of scale to enter the market with cost-effective, functional ingredients.

Mr. Mayhew was recruited to Debut Biotech from Native Microbials Inc. in San Diego, where he was the vice president of process development and manufacturing from 2019 to 2022. He also succeeded as a senior manager of process development at BASF Enzymes LLC, where he developed his expertise in bioprocess engineering between 2014 and 2019.

Mr. Mayhew's earlier career included significant roles at Verenium Corporation and Codexis. As the director of process development at Verenium Corporation from 2011 to 2013, he played a crucial role in advancing the company's technology base before it was acquired by BASF. At Codexis, Mr. Mayhew held various positions from 2001 to 2011, including group leader in bioprocess engineering, metabolites research and development manager, bioprocess development scientist III, and senior fermentation research and development scientist.

Highly educated, Mr. Mayhew earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of California Los Angeles in 1994 and a Master of Science in Biotechnology from The Johns Hopkins University in 2000.

Beyond his professional life, Mr. Mayhew is actively involved in community activities. He volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America, which also engages his son. Additionally, he supports his local Buddhist church alongside his wife, reflecting their commitment to family and community.

Mr. Mayhew envisions building out biomanufacturing both domestically and globally. He aims to be a catalyst for positive change within the industry by transforming its message and achieving success stories related to scaling up and commercializing biomanufactured products.
