Dr. Driever has established a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in the field of geography and urban studies. Since 2018, he has held the title of professor emeritus of the same fields at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he continues to be recognized for his expertise and contributions to the academic community.
Prior to attaining emeritus status, Dr. Driever served as a professor of geography and urban studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Throughout his tenure, he was instrumental in advancing research and education in the areas of the geography of Spain and Latin America, along with historical, cultural and urban geography. His commitment to these disciplines has earned him recognition as an expert in each, reflecting both his scholarly rigor and dedication to expanding knowledge within these fields.
In 1996, Dr. Driever was selected as a senior researcher with the U.S. Fulbright Exchange Program with Spain. This prestigious appointment enabled him to further his research interests abroad, deepening his understanding of Spanish geography and culture while contributing to international academic exchange. He also served as a visiting professor at Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico, for the academic year 1988-89, after beginning his career as a teaching assistant.
Among Dr. Driever's most notable scholarly achievements are two significant publications that have had a lasting impact on the field. In 1994, he authored the comprehensive "Spanish/English Dictionary of Human and Physical Geography," a work comprising over 700 pages that required extensive research and dedication. In 1998, he collaborated with renowned Spanish scientist Dr. Francisco Ayala-Carcedo on "Lucas Mallada: La futura revolución española y otros escritos regeneracionistas," published in Spain. For this volume, Dr. Driever contributed a substantial introduction and an annotated study, further cementing his reputation as a leading scholar in Spanish historical geography.
In his own academic journey, Dr. Driever began with a Bachelor of Arts in geography, with distinction, from the University of Virginia in 1969. He continued his studies by earning a Master of Science in geography from Northwestern University in 1970. There was a hiatus in his studies when he served on active duty in the US Marine Corps from 1970-73 and the inactive reserves from 1973-76, with the final rank of Captain. He completed the Doctor of Philosophy in geography at the University of Georgia in 1977.
Throughout his career, Dr. Driever has been actively involved in numerous professional and civic organizations. He is a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and has served as president, secretary and presenter for Plano Chapter #37, Texas SAR. At the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he held several leadership roles, including vice chair of the faculty senate, department chair, director of the urban studies program, and president of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at UMKC.
In recognition of his interdisciplinary contributions to teaching and research, Dr. Driever received the Outstanding Interdisciplinary Faculty Award from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2011. His influence extends beyond campus through service on the board of directors for the Conference of Latin American Geography and on the advisory boards for Kawsmouth, a Journal of Regional History as well as for National Forum: The Phi Kappa Phi Journal. Additionally, he contributed to international scholarship as a United States correspondent for Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, France, and participated in the national screening committee for awards with the Fulbright U.S. Student Program in Spain.
Outside his professional pursuits, Dr. Driever is dedicated to lifelong learning and enjoys studying Chinese and Spanish. He is married and a proud father to three children. Looking back on his career, he attributes his enduring success to a strong work ethic and an unwavering passion for making a difference within his field. His early enthusiasm for education during college set him apart from his peers and continues to inspire his ongoing commitment to scholarship and service within geography and urban studies.
