Dr. Lawton, a distinguished Podiatric Surgeon, has dedicated more than 45 years to advancing the field of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. His career has continued by providing online consultations, during which he continues to share his expertise with patients and colleagues remotely. This final phase of his professional journey has allowed Dr. Lawton to remain engaged in patient care and medical education, even after stepping back from full-time clinical practice.

Before retiring from clinical practice, Dr. Lawton served as the Residency Director of the Podiatric Surgical Residency at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in shaping the next generations of Podiatric Surgeons. In his career, he directed two Podiatric Surgical Residency programs in Chicago, mentoring both students and post-graduate residents in surgical practice. Dr. Lawton's leadership extended beyond administrative duties, deeply involved in curriculum development and hands-on training, ensuring that residents received comprehensive education grounded in the latest surgical techniques and patient care standards.

Dr. Lawton also held the position of Professor of Surgery at the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine while teaching the Podiatric Surgery course. During his tenure, he became a sought-after educator, delivering hundreds of lectures across the U.S. and internationally, including presentations in Italy. His curriculum vitae reflects a lifelong dedication to advancing medical and surgical knowledge. Dr. Lawton played a pivotal role in academic institutions, not only teaching but also inspiring countless students and professionals within the field.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Lawton was on the clinical teaching faculty for 28 years at the Family Practice Residency program at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL. This experience broadened his clinical perspective and enhanced his ability to provide holistic care to patients with complex medical and surgical needs. During his tenure at MacNeal Hospital he was appointed as a clinical Assistant Professor at the Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine at the University of Illinois where he contributed to the academic development of future physicians by integrating Podiatric principles into a broader medical curricula. For 20 years Dr. Lawton was also on the teaching clinical faculty at the Family Practice Residency Program at LaGrange Memorial Hospital in LaGrange, IL.

During his youth he earned the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America in 1961. Dr. Lawton's educational background laid a strong foundation for his achievements. He graduated from St. Mel High School in Chicago in 1963. Subsequently, he received a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1967, and a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree (DPM) from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago in 1971. Dr. Lawton then completed a 2 year Surgical Residency at Franklin Boulevard Community Hospital in Chicago in 1973. He received licensure as a Podiatric Surgeon in Illinois, Wisconsin and California, underscoring his broad professional reach and recognition across multiple states. He is Board-Certified in Podiatric Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and he served as President of the Board in 1984-1985.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lawton has been an active member of numerous professional organizations. Today, he remains a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, where he also held various positions, including President in 1989-1990. Dr. Lawton is one (1) on only six (6) Podiatric Surgeons who have been honored to be elected as President of both the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons in the 170 year history of the profession. These affiliations reflect his commitment to professional excellence and ongoing contributions to the advancement of Podiatric Surgery.

Dr. Lawton's distinguished career has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Henry L. DuVries, MD Award for Excellence in Surgery; a Special Recognition award from the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association; a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville; and a Service Achievement Award from the John Barth Foundation at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Attributing much of his professional success to the exceptional educators and mentors who guided him throughout his academic and medical journey, he notes the attending physicians who mentored him and exemplified clinical excellence while instilling resilience and purpose. These qualities have defined Dr. Lawton's approach to both patient care and education.
