GREENWICH, CT, September 04, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alexandru Gheorghe has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A highly influential and award-winning coach and player in the sport of field hockey, Mr. Gheorghe is marked by his record of leadership and achievement across multiple continents. Since 2015, he has served as the founder and owner of AGH Hockey Club, an elite travel hockey program in which he coaches the top two teams in the U12, U14, U16 and U19 divisions. His focus on high performance has enabled each of these teams to compete at the national level in showcases, national events and club championships. Applying his decades of experience as a field hockey player to his role as a coach, he prioritizes honesty and teaches his teams the importance of trust, adaptability and education.
In addition to his work with AGH Hockey Club, Mr. Gheorghe is the owner of Excel Hockey Camps, further expanding his influence in youth sports training and development. Through this venture, he provides specialized coaching that emphasizes skill acquisition and competitive readiness for young athletes. He is also the owner of Spotlight — a showcase organization for Division 1, 2 and 3 coaches as well as international coaches — and the co-founder and co-director of Rye Field Hockey Academy, where he has contributed to the growth of the sport through innovative programming and athlete mentorship.
Since 2012, Mr. Gheorghe has been the director of coaching at Sacred Heart Greenwich, where he has transformed the school's athletic program by developing multiple United States national team field hockey players whom he began coaching as early as fourth and fifth grade. Under his guidance, the Sacred Heart team achieved a No. 1 ranking in the Northeast for two years and reached a national high school ranking of No. 11. His efforts over the years have resulted in a remarkable 25 Division 1 and 3 players committing to universities — a significant accomplishment given the school's small size and limited emphasis on athletics. This has, in turn, inspired new families to enroll their children at Sacred Heart and pursue both academic and athletic opportunities.
Mr. Gheorghe began his storied coaching journey in his native Romania at age 16. Three years later, he became the head coach for both the U21 and U18 Romanian national teams, leading them in international competitions. After relocating to the United States in 2011, he coached the indoor women's national team for two years. Also a highly accomplished athlete in his own right, he continues to play for the USA men's national team, representing the country in indoor World Cups, the Pan American Games for outdoor World Cups and additional international events.
Having played hockey since age six and spent approximately 15 years on the Romanian national team, Mr. Gheorghe's passion for the sport is deeply rooted. Although his initial professional experience was in government and the secret service in Romania — including three-and-a-half years serving with special troops and special weapons and tactics (SWAT) units in the Romanian Armed Forces — he ultimately dedicated himself to supporting young athletes through field hockey programs designed not as businesses but as platforms for personal growth and achievement.
Before relocating to the United States, Mr. Gheorghe earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and sports in Romania. To expand his qualifications as an instructor at the highest level, he also completed two years of national coaching education. He attributes much of his success to honesty, fairness and straightforward communication with his athletes. Thanks to a consistency in his approach that fosters trust and discipline among those he coaches, these same qualities have become foundational to their growth as players and individuals.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Gheorghe is civically engaged as a donor of sports equipment to international countries seeking to advance their athletic endeavors — particularly Romania and Uganda — and supports international programs that provide aid to disadvantaged communities.
Widely recognized for his impact on both men's and women's field hockey, Mr. Gheorghe has received numerous accolades throughout the career. In Romania, he earned gold medals as a men's national team player and later as the head coach of the women's national team. Since arriving in the United States, he has coached men's teams to first place at both the 4Goals Cup and the USA National Indoor Tournament; his efforts have seen him awarded with New England and Connecticut Coach of the Year honors in both 2019 and 2020.
Furthermore, Mr. Gheorghe has achieved first place rankings at the USA National Cup Championship for the U14 and U16 divisions as well as top five rankings nationally with AGH Hockey Club. At Sacred Heart Greenwich, he led his team to a championship title at the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Championship Tournament — its first in more than 30 years — and won the first New England title in school history.
Determined to grow the sport of field hockey even further in the future, Mr. Gheorghe aims to inspire young athletes to join athletic organizations where they can gain valuable experience in team environments. He seeks to empower them to make informed decisions about their futures as they approach college life while preparing them mentally for workforce challenges by teaching resilience under pressure and encouraging them not to fear failure or change. His primary goal is to expose athletes to physical endurance demands while equipping them with the skills necessary for success both on and off the field, reflecting his unwavering passion for sport, youth development and fostering outstanding character.
