BOWIE, MD, September 08, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rory A. Palmieri has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Palmieri, born in Yuma, Arizona, has established a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, marked by expertise in world cinema, American, British and world literature, language and language translation. His professional journey reflects a deep commitment to scholarship, creativity and service.
Dr. Palmieri's most recent professional endeavors have centered on his work as a translator since 1999. In this capacity, he has operated independently, applying his extensive knowledge of languages to scholarly pursuits and translation projects. Notably, he contributed as a contractor for The Cutting Corporation on the Books for the Blind and Print Disabled project under the Library of Congress for three months. He also served as a translator contractor for one year, further honing his skills in rendering complex texts accessible across linguistic boundaries.
From 1985 to 1999, Dr. Palmieri served as translator and reporter with the United States Department of Defense. In this role, he was responsible for reading information from abroad in various languages and writing reports based on these materials for multiple agencies within the United States government, including the White House and intelligence agencies. His work required him to operate in top-secret environments, collecting, receiving and analyzing foreign language materials from around the world to identify information of strategic interest to the government.
Before his tenure with the Department of Defense, Dr. Palmieri taught English at the university level from 1978 to 1983. During this period, he lectured on composition, film and literature at Brown University, sharing his passion for literature and cinema with students and colleagues alike.
Following graduation, he worked with ACME Reporting LLC in Washington, D.C., for six months in 1984.
In addition to his professional roles, Dr. Palmieri has made significant contributions as an amateur filmmaker. Among his proudest achievements is the creation of three films as an independent filmmaker. One notable project was a horror film entitled "Redneck: Man's Search for Evil," made during his senior year of high school, that aired on a local television station in Washington, D.C.; he was subsequently interviewed about this work in 1972. In the 1990s, while working for the federal government, Dr. Palmieri collaborated with others to produce a feature-length documentary titled "The Poets from Planet X," which chronicled a local bar's poetry night. He later collaborated on a short comedy entitled "Dick's Last Shoot." These creative endeavors underscore his lifelong dedication to film as both an art form and a medium for cultural expression.
Dr. Palmieri's expertise extends beyond filmmaking and translation; he is recognized for mastering seventeen languages, primarily by reading books by the great writers in each language with the aid of dictionaries, and for quickly achieving expert certification in a language, a technique he has written about in a government agency publication.
Throughout his career with the government, he worked with approximately nine languages—two acquired through formal training and seven self-taught through rigorous study of grammar books and foreign literature. Currently engaged in learning his seventeenth language, Dr. Palmieri continues to translate books and articles and to immerse himself daily in Hungarian, Italian, French and Romanian texts.
His professional affiliations include membership in the Modern Language Association of America from 1980 to 1987.
Dr. Palmieri's academic background is equally impressive. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in English language and literature from Brown University in 1984 after completing a master's degree in English language and literature at the same institution in 1981. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature from Harvard University in 1976. His academic pursuits were complemented by coursework in Old English during his graduate studies and early proficiency in French during high school, followed by self-directed study of German and Latin.
Dr. Palmieri holds several language expert certifications in Bulgarian, French, German, modern Greek and Serbian-Croatian. These credentials have been instrumental in enabling him to navigate diverse professional environments within government service and beyond.
Throughout his life, Dr. Palmieri has attributed his success to an enduring passion for cinema, literature and language, a passion ignited during childhood after viewing influential films such as "Lonely Are the Brave" and "Spartacus." By age nine, he was reading classic American literature, solidifying his desire to dedicate himself to these fields.
Dr. Palmieri's civic recognitions include being named valedictorian of his high school class in 1972 and induction into the National Honor Society from 1970 to 1972.
Dr. Palmieri's creative output encompasses several short and feature films, including "Dick's Last Shoot" in 1996 and "Poets from Planet X" in 1995. He was featured on television during an interview about his early filmmaking efforts in 1972. His doctoral dissertation focused on film director Sam Peckinpah and he has been featured in various published articles.
Despite challenges related to eyesight that led him to cease professional employment in 2002, Dr. Palmieri has continued scholarly work focused on foreign languages while pursuing personal interests with honesty and integrity, values central to his approach to life.
Looking ahead, Dr. Palmieri intends to maintain his engagement with books and movies while completing his book "Power and Revolution: Surveying and Tracking the Films of Miklós Jancsó," the first English-language study to explore the complete legacy of one of cinema's greatest underappreciated directors.
