Prior to his tenure at Intel, Mr. Hughes began his professional journey in manufacturing at age 19, manufacturing fiberglass products, at age 21, he began working at WordPerfect — a word processing platform that debuted in 1979 and gained widespread popularity in the 1980s and 1990s — in a related field. This early experience laid the foundation for his future achievements and provided him with valuable technical insights that would later inform his work as an engineer at Intel.
While also working in the private sector, Mr. Hughes served for 10 years in a combat unit with the Utah National Guard. During his military service, he demonstrated exemplary commitment and leadership, earning the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service. Attaining the rank of sergeant, he narrowly missed deployment as part of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 when his unit was pulled back just days before it was to be sent overseas. His military background instilled him with discipline and resilience, qualities that have continued to influence his engineering endeavors.
Though his career counts many milestones, Mr. Hughes is particularly proud of his progression from technician to lithography engineer and subsequently to senior development engineer at Intel Corporation — a trajectory he achieved despite holding only an associate degree from Utah Valley University. His advancement toward the technologist level, stands as a testament to his longstanding dedication and continuous learning within the field.
In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Hughes was listed in the National Collegiate Directory in 1996 and 1997, reflecting early recognition of his academic and professional promise. He is also an active member of the American Legion, underscoring his ongoing commitment to service and assisting his fellow veterans.
