Dr. Messenger has established a distinguished career in military laboratory medicine, currently serving as the Chief of Blood Services at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) since 2022, the only Level-1 trauma center in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In this capacity, she oversees a comprehensive portfolio that includes transfusion services, a blood donor center supplying blood products for both oversees contingency operations and BAMC's trauma mission, a cellular therapy clinic specializing in stem cell processing, and a therapeutic apheresis clinic responsible for both stem cell collection and therapeutic exchanges. Her leadership encompasses managing contracts for all blood services and related supplies, supervising a team of 80 employees comprising military, civilian and contract staff, and overseeing the daily operations within her four functional areas to ensuring the safety of the blood supply and the patients they support. Furthermore, Dr. Messenger collaborates closely with the Armed Services Blood Program, serves on multiple committees, and supports the development of the new theater blood module scheduled for rollout by 2026.
Before her assignment at Brooke Army Medical Center, Dr. Messenger was the Chief of the Armed Services Blood Bank Center-Pacific Northwest donor center at Madigan Army Medical Center from 2016-2017. Her earlier military service included commanding a blood support detachment while deployed in Afghanistan, where she played a pivotal role in advancing transfusion medicine within DoD. Notably, Dr. Messenger led the introduction of cold-stored platelets in Afghanistan, the first use case within the DoD. Under her direction, a proof-of-concept initiative was launched that ultimately led to U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to extend the shelf life from three days to 14 days, a protocol now widely adopted across both military and civilian health care systems. Dr. Messenger also made significant contributions to the low-titer O whole blood program with the Rangers in Afghanistan during her 2014 – 2015 deployment, facilitating the collection and transfusion of the first LTOWB units used during missions and paving the way for the adoption of low-titer whole blood across emergency medical services nationwide.
Dr. Messenger's academic background began with a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science from Austin Peay State University in 2009. She then earned a master's degree in immunohematology, with honors, from The George Washington University in 2013. Notably, she was recognized as the premier Medical Service Corp graduate in the National Capital Region, receiving the Silver Caduceus - Golden Twig Award. Subsequently, Dr. Messenger earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas - San Antonio in 2022.
In addition to her degrees, Dr. Messenger's professional excellence is reflected in her active membership in several leading organizations, including the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and the Society of Armed Forces Medical Laboratory Scientists (SAFMLS).
Dr. Messenger's contributions were recognized in 2016 when she was named the Blood Bank Fellow of the Year by the Society of Armed Forces Medical Laboratory Scientists. She is also being recognized as the Distinguished Military Alumni of the Year from Austin Peay State University in October 2025. Dr. Messenger attributes her success entirely to her military service, which provided both professional opportunities and full support for her academic pursuits.
Looking ahead, Dr. Messenger will join the Armed Services Blood Program at Defense Health Agency headquarters in 2026, where she will focus on policy development and implementation across all military branches. She also aspires to complete her military career with distinction before pursuing teaching opportunities in medical laboratory science and blood banking at her alma mater, Austin Peay State University.
