Dr. Mielke has established himself as a leading expert in research, particularly in environmental health and toxicology, over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades. Since 2006, he has held the position of professor of environmental signaling in medicine within the department of pharmacology at the school of medicine at Tulane University, contributing to both academic instruction and groundbreaking research. Additionally, since 2022, Dr. Mielke has served as an adjunct research professor on campus, where he continues to advance the field through innovative studies and mentorship.

With over 50 years of teaching experience, Dr. Mielke served as a research professor at the Tulane-Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research, where he played a pivotal role in interdisciplinary projects addressing urban environmental health challenges from 2006 to 2011. His earlier tenure as a professor in the college of pharmacy at Tulane University between 1989 and 2006 was marked by significant advancements in toxicology and environmental health. Concurrently, from 1992 to 2006, Dr. Mielke contributed as a researcher with the Association of Minority Health Professional Schools, focusing on health disparities and environmental justice.

Dr. Mielke's impact also included his work at Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy, where he served as an associate professor from 1988 to 1998 and as a full professor until 2006. Earlier in his career, he served as a research associate at the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, between 1986 and 1988. Dr. Mielke also taught as an assistant professor of geography and environmental studies and was a visiting research scientist at Macalester College, where he advocated for environmental policy changes despite institutional challenges, was a senior researcher with the Maryland Environmental Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture Waste Management Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, where he developed a highly sensitive method for measuring lead levels in the environment, and was an assistant professor of geography, biogeography and climatology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, dating back to 1973.

Dr. Mielke's early years included teaching biology and English at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1966, contributing as a summer faculty fellow with the earth resources division at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland and teaching as an adjunct assistant professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles, beginning in 1971.

In preparation for his future, Dr. Mielke earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology with minors in chemistry and geography from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1963. Subsequently, he received a Master of Science in biology in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in geography in 1972 from the University of Michigan. Dr. Mielke also holds credentials as a certified environmental inspector and certified environmental consultant, both of which have supported his leadership roles across academia and public health initiatives.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mielke has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the division of environmental chemistry within the American Chemical Society, the Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health, the Society of Toxicology and the International Society for Children's Health and the Environment. He is a long-standing member of Sigma Xi National Honorary Scientific Research Society.

Dr. Mielke's civic involvement includes membership on the scientific advisory committee for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and participation on the lead exposure and prevention advisory committee (LEPAC) for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His early experiences as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer teacher at Likuni Boys Secondary School in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 1963 to 1965, developed an appreciation for cross-cultural engagement and capacity building, shaping his commitment to global health and education.

A prolific contributor to scientific literature, Dr. Mielke co-authored works such as "Children, Soils, and Health: How Do Polluted Soils Influence Children's Health?" and "Lead-dust Contaminated Communities and Minority Health: A New Paradigm." He has also published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.

Among his most significant achievements throughout Dr. Mielke's career was his role in testifying in the U.S. Senate for removing lead from gasoline, a milestone that dramatically improved public health outcomes both nationally and internationally by reducing population-wide exposure by more than 90% by 1992. He credits much inspiration to family members, including his brother, his brother-in-law, and his brother-in-law's father, whose pioneering work on water chlorination revolutionized global water safety standards. Dr. Mielke's enduring goal is to create environments safe for children because he understands that safeguarding childhood health is fundamental to societal well-being. Additionally, he aims to finish writing his memoir.
