DURHAM, NC, September 10, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ila Denise Mapp, RN, DNP, MSN, CENP, CCRN, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Mapp has distinguished herself as a transformational leader and expert in intensive care nursing, having served as the director of Advanced Care at Home at UNC Health since 2021. In this capacity, she manages her team, removes barriers and provides the necessary support to ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care. She oversees all operations for the program, ensuring that staff and management have the resources necessary to provide comprehensive care to patients in their homes. She is also responsible for teaching leadership and research for nursing at North Carolina Central University, furthering her commitment to advancing the profession.
A pivotal achievement in Dr. Mapp's career has been the launch and expansion of the Advanced Care at Home program at UNC Health. Developed in 2020 and officially opened in 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, this initiative allows patients to receive hospital-level medical care in their own homes through advanced technology and remote monitoring. Under Dr. Mapp's direction, the program grew from serving one or two patients to supporting 15 to 20 patients at a time, with plans for continued growth. She is especially proud of this accomplishment, which has set a benchmark for similar programs nationwide.
In addition to her directorial responsibilities, Dr. Mapp is also an advisor to the Hospital at Home ICD Events Group, representing UNC Health on a national stage. Prior to her current position, she served as Patient Services Manager III at UNC Medical Center in 2013.
Earlier in her career as a nurse manager for Adult Specialty Care Teams at UNC Medical Center, Dr. Mapp managed three critical teams: the Venous Access Team, the Rapid Response Team, and the ICU Transport Team. She notably expanded the Rapid Response Team from two to ten members which led to intrahospital mortality and morbidity deduction. In addition, she later developed the Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) Liaison team within the Adult Specialty Care division to support physicians in placing central lines for patient care to combat hospital acquired central line infections. Her leadership contributed significantly to increasing the prominence of these teams within the hospital system, with other institutions now looking to UNC's model as a path to follow.
Dr. Mapp's previous roles include numerous nursing positions in the ICU, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Neurological Intensive Care Unit. She has also contributed as a traveling nurse and has furthered her expertise through membership in the American Nursing Association, the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
Serving as a foundation for her work, Dr. Mapp earned a Doctorate in Executive Leadership in 2019, following a Master of Science in Nursing degree in Education and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, all from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She also holds an Associate Degree in Nursing. Her certifications include Executive Nurse Practitioner, Post-Master's Certificate in Health Administration, a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and a Registered Nurse licensure.
Dr. Mapp's commitment to excellence in nursing has been recognized through numerous accolades, including the Great 100 Nurses award, UNC's Nurse Manager of the Year, and Employee of the Month. In 2012, she was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She has also contributed to scholarly work as a co-author, alongside L.L. Davis and H. Krowchuk, on the article "Prevention of Unplanned Intensive Care Unit Admissions and Hospital Mortality by Early Warning Systems," published in Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing. Dr. Mapp led the implementation of the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) within the electronic medical record at UNC Hospitals, enhancing early recognition of patient deterioration and reducing failure-to-rescue events.
Looking back, Dr. Mapp credits her achievements to her unwavering faith, the steadfast support of her brother, the encouragement of her adopted sisters, and the camaraderie of her work family. Most profoundly, she draws daily inspiration from the memory of her mother, whom she keeps close to her heart. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Mapp is civically engaged—contributing to Thanksgiving dinners through her home church in Florida, mentoring nursing leaders and students, and enjoying time with her dog. She also finds joy in watching Hallmark movies and cheering on NFL football.
In the upcoming years, Dr. Mapp aims to expand the Advanced Care at Home program further within UNC Health and provide services across additional hospitals within the organization. These services provide inpatient care in the patient's home improving access to care, increasing hospital throughput capacity, and enhancing patient satisfaction. Believing that everyone possesses leadership qualities, she advises others to grow their abilities when they can, as one never knows what opportunities might lie ahead.
