CHICAGO, IL, September 11, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Professor Apryl Renee Brown has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Professor Brown is currently a Master of Divinity candidate at the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she has been pursuing advanced theological studies since 2023. In this capacity, she integrates her ongoing ministry and public health work, reflecting her commitment to holistic community service. As a tenured deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Professor Brown is on track for ordination as an elder and serves as health director for health care and environmental justice with the African Methodist Episcopal Church International Health Commission. Her leadership in this role involves developing and implementing health initiatives that address environmental justice and healthcare disparities within faith communities.
From 2021 to 2023, Professor Brown served as an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, where she taught biology and health sciences. Concurrently, from 2007 to 2023, she held the position of adjunct professor at Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD). Her dedication to student success was recognized upon receiving the Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society of Education Teacher of Honor Award and the 2012 WCCCD Award of Outstanding Teaching, respectively in 2010 and 2012. During her tenure, she founded Michigan's only chapter of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society at a community college in 2013, guiding students toward consistent academic achievement and fostering a culture of scientific excellence.
Between 2017 and 2020, Professor Brown contributed to public health scholarship as a public health editor-in-chief and a member of the advisory board for MedCrave Journals with MedCrave Group. In this editorial role, she oversaw peer-reviewed publications that addressed pressing issues in public health and social determinants of health.
Her earlier career included serving as the Detroit Medical Reserve Corps coordinator from 2004 to 2017, where she managed emergency preparedness programs and mobilized volunteers for public health emergencies. From 2007 to 2009, Professor Brown was a community education associate at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, focusing on outreach and educational initiatives that promoted community wellness.
Professor Brown's professional affiliations reflect her commitment to scientific advancement and public health advocacy. She became a full member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society in 2016 and is a lifetime member of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society. She is an active member of the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, and the Michigan Public Health Association.
Professor Brown's academic journey began with a diploma in chemical-biological curriculum from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in 1978. She completed coursework in general studies at Spelman College before earning a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University in 1983. She continued her education by obtaining a Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine in 1996, completing her clinical training at Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago. Driven by a desire to improve community health outcomes, she pursued a Master of Public Health in health systems management from Tulane University's Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, graduating in 2000. At Tulane University, she was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society of Public Health and served nationally as an officer at large on its executive committee.
Professor Brown's passion for science was inspired by her father, a graduate in math and physics from the Detroit Institute of Technology. This early influence led her to become active in Sigma Xi, where she has collaborated with distinguished scientists and served on the council overseeing nominations and judging student science fairs. Her dedication to integrating science with ministry is further demonstrated through her completion of a unit of clinical pastoral education at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she provided spiritual support to patients undergoing stem cell procedures.
Throughout her career, Professor Brown has maintained significant civic involvement. From 2022-2023, she was an ex-officio member of the Executive Board while chair of the Science Board for the American Public Health Association (APHA), contributing to national policy discussions on public health science. She has held various leadership roles within APHA, including governing council member, nomination committee member, education board member and action board member from 2008 to 2017. From 2015 to 2017, she was president of the Black Caucus of Health Workers within APHA. From 2021 to 2023, she was president of the Michigan Public Health Association, an active state affiliate of APHA. Serving in this capacity, she led several board of directors to address health equity in the National Leadership Academy for the Public's Health fellowship program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Her service extends to membership with the Rotary Club of Detroit as a Paul Harris Fellow and participation as an interviewer of the Youth Citizen Service Award Committee for high school student scholarships. She was also a member of the Council of Chaplains for the Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., an active member and the 2019-2023 B chair of the community impact committee with the Junior League of Detroit.
Professor Brown's scholarly output includes leading projects such as Healthy for Life with the African Methodist Episcopal Church International Health Commission Program from 2018-2020. Her publications include "The community impact of social determinants of health," published by MedCrave Online Journal of Public Health in 2016, and "Valuing education during National Public Health Week," published by MedCrave Online Journal of Public Health in 2015. Over the years, she has also contributed to oral presentations such as "Educating Students to Excel Both Inside and Outside the Classroom" and "Utilizing Real Life Scenarios to Help Students Attain Careers in the Health Profession."
Throughout her career, Professor Brown has been honored many times for her outstanding work ethic and dedication to public health. In addition to earning the American Public Health Association's Black Caucus Community Service Award in 2009, she received the Community-Based Public Health Caucus E. Hill DeLoney Award from the same institution in 2010 and the Tulane School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine's Community Leader in Global Health Award in 2012 during the school's centennial celebration. Similarly, she has been recognized with several leadership certificates within the field. She was elected a fellow of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago in 2024.
Born in Detroit, Professor Brown enjoys visiting museums and learning about Black history. She is dedicated to collaborating with her church and continuing her work with the Health Commission to build healthier communities through public health expertise. As health director for health care environmental justice with the African Methodist Episcopal Church International Health Commission, she actively participates in monthly meetings and finds fulfillment in giving back through service. She also hopes to continue teaching at the undergraduate level while integrating her public health background with community service. Committed to making a meaningful impact, she views her knowledge as a tool to uplift others and honors a personal vow to God to help transform lives.
A third-generation graduate of Wayne State University following her mother's and grandmother's legacy in education, Professor Brown remains steadfast in her mission to transform lives by blending science and ministry for the betterment of her community.
