Mr. Smith has established a distinguished career defined by entrepreneurial leadership and commercial success in the fields of oil and gas drilling, financing, and investment, as well as in providing general business and financial guidance.
After 15 years in the oil & gas industry, running his family's and then his own petroleum companies, in 1991, he formed and, as Sr. Managing Director, led COSCO Capital Management LLC, an oil & gas focused investment banking firm, which acted as intermediary between Private Equity and oil & gas start-ups. In June 2008, he sold COSCO to Rodman & Renshaw LLC and then, between 2008 and 2010, served as Head of Rodman's Energy Group. During the 1990s, Mr. Smith also established the COSCO Private Equity Energy Conferences in New York, Houston, and Calgary, which conferences continue to this day under ownership of the IPAA and Hart Energy.
After leaving Rodman and taking a couple years' sabbatical to travel around the world, in 2011, Mr. Smith joined Warburg Pincus LLC in New York City as Senior Advisor to its Energy Group. In this role, he leveraged his deep industry knowledge to guide investment strategies within the oil and gas energy sector, contributing to the firm's reputation for excellence in private equity.
After retiring from Warburg, in 2019, Mr. Smith formed COSCO Consulting LLC, based in Sharon, Connecticut. As its Senior Managing Director, Mr. Smith provides COSCO's clients with strategic guidance and advisory services, drawing on decades of experience to support clients in achieving their financial and operational objectives.
From the late 1970s through until 2024, Mr. Smith also led or contributed to the success of various of the Buckley Family's investment vehicles, which included the A. S. Buckley Home Trust, the Hembdt Trust, later Hembdt Associates, LLC, and Corporacion de Tierras Bahia de Salinas, preserving and enhancing their Real Estate and oil & gas holdings in North & South America, Europe, and Australia. He is particularly proud of ensuring their continued good management by engineering leadership succession to the next generation of Buckley Family members, an accomplishment that testifies to his vision and dedication to the entire Buckley Family.
Since 2015, Mr. Smith has also served as the director at Media Research Center. His involvement with this organization reflects his commitment to fostering informed discourse and support for transparency in both legacy and now social media. Between 2014 and 2025, for his sins Mr. Smith also served as President and Director of the Great Elm Community and Condo Associations, which he had helped organize to develop and preserve his family's estate in Sharon CT.
Earlier in his career, from 1978 to 1991, Mr. Smith formed and was president of Taconic Petroleum Corporation and the Riga Oil Company, both based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Albercan Oil Corporation, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. These companies formed limited partnerships and drilled, operated, and produced wells primarily in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Alberta.
Mr. Smith's professional journey began at The Catawba Corporation in New York City, which was owned primarily by the children of William F. Buckley, Sr. and provided management services to seven publicly traded oil & gas and mineral companies based in the US, Canada, South America, and Australia. While employed by Catawba, Mr. Smith received his MSc in Geology from Pennsylvania State University, worked for two of Catawba's Calgary based client companies as a generating geologist, then as vice-president, later president, oversaw the reorganization of Catawba, the establishment of new oil companies in Tulsa and Real Estate companies in Connecticut and Venezuela, and executed a hostile takeover of the management of the Family's royalty trust.
Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, summa cum laude, from Princeton University in 1972, where he was also captain of the 1971 Varsity Soccer Team. After Princeton, Mr. Smith worked for a year as a teacher of literature and art history at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville CT, before returning to school to earn his MSc in Geology from the Penn State in 1975. His expertise is recognized through memberships with professional organizations like the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Tulsa Geological Society, and Energy Advocates in Tulsa. Civically, Mr. Smith assisted in the creation of the Court Barn Museum in Chipping Campden, England and sat on the Advisory Board of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK. He is currently affiliated with the Union League Club of New York and the Sharon Country Club of Sharon CT. He has won the golf championships 4 times at the ULC and 21 times (so far) at the SCC.
