Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Recognized for her expertise in analytical biochemistry, infectious diseases and lipidomics, Dr. Chakraborti is a distinguished scientist, researcher and author. Committed to advancing scientific understanding and supporting the next generation of researchers, she began her tenure at the Masonic Medical Research Institute in 2025, where she continues to contribute her knowledge and skills as a scientist. Her work at the institute builds upon her extensive background in biochemical research and infectious disease studies.
From 2018 to 2024, Dr. Chakraborti served as a research scientist at Stony Brook University. During this period, she focused on antibiotic resistance with an emphasis on developing improved antibiotics for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. Her research, which centered on lipid metabolism, aimed to enhance the efficacy of antibiotics used in treatment protocols. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks in her research journey, she persevered and successfully published her findings. She is particularly proud of her work as the corresponding author of "Understanding Lipid Metabolism, Metabolic Pathways for Antibiotic Resistance, Tuberculosis," which appeared in the influential American Chemical Society Journal.
In addition to her published research article, Dr. Chakraborti has presented her findings and viewpoints at Gordon Research Conferences as a discussion leader and speaker. Her outstanding contributions have seen her recognized through numerous distinguished travel awards and honors from the State University of New York Research Foundation.
Outside of her primary role, Dr. Chakraborti is professionally affiliated with the American Chemical Society and the Metabolomics Society. She is also an active member of the Graduate Women in Science and Engineering group at Stony Brook University, where she writes about the experiences of female students and scientists to champion their advancement in the field.
Academically, Dr. Chakraborti earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Stony Brook University in 2024. Determined to make an impact as an instructor as well, she taught courses in biology and multiple levels of chemistry at the institution from 2019 to 2021 and also in 2025. Prior to relocating to the United States, she obtained a Master of Science in biochemistry in 2018 and a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry in 2016, both from the University of Calcutta in India.
Along with her education, Dr. Chakraborti attributes her success to self-belief, inspiration drawn from reading others' stories and the conviction that if others can achieve their goals, she can too. Growing up as an only child in a family of scientists in India, she was inspired by her parents' enthusiasm for their work and their independence in designing experiments, which motivated her to pursue a career in science.
Beyond her scientific research, Dr. Chakraborti is deeply involved in community service endeavors. She leads two book groups for senior citizens at her local library and serves as a yoga teacher there as well. Additionally, she volunteers at a senior living facility, demonstrating her passion for civic engagement and helping others.
In her personal life, Dr. Chakraborti manages her own blog and enjoys playing the piano, practicing and teaching yoga and reading books. She is a firm believer that storytelling is a powerful tool because every tale is unique and personal.
Looking to the future with optimism, Dr. Chakraborti aspires to become an independent scientist and encourages young people to pursue similar paths despite the competitive nature of the field. Recognizing that support from established professionals is crucial for emerging scientists navigating the challenging modern-day landscape, she continues to set a shining example through her research, perseverance and community service.
