Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Lesnicki has established a distinguished career in the field of process development and biotechnology, marked by significant leadership roles and innovative contributions to scientific research and industry. For the past two years, he has served as vice president of process sciences and engineering at Mykito Sciences. In this capacity, Mr. Lesnicki is responsible for reading articles and conducting patent searches related to chitosan, reviewing relevant scientific papers and publications, and engaging with patent holders to explore the development of non-animal-based chitosan products. He also maintains active communication with contract manufacturing organizations in Canada, ensuring that process scale-up aligns with the specific requirements of each facility.
Since 1995, Mr. Lesnicki has also been the co-founder of Raven Biotech Inc., a company he founded with a mission to support scientific research rather than pursue economic gain. Under his leadership, Raven Biotech designed an instrument for growing fungal organisms such as yeast, which precisely measures and controls nutrient supply to prevent overdosing. This device has been distributed globally, providing researchers with a valuable tool for their work.
From 2019 to 2023, Mr. Lesnicki held the position of director of upstream process development at Lundbeck Seattle Biopharmaceuticals Inc. During this period, he applied his expertise in scaling up bioprocesses and managing complex projects within the biopharmaceutical sector.
Between 2010 and 2019, Mr. Lesnicki was director at Alder Biopharmaceuticals. His tenure was highlighted by his collaboration with scientists to design a process for creating a monoclonal antibody used worldwide in the treatment of migraine headaches. He played a pivotal role in designing and scaling up the manufacturing process to 40,000 liters while navigating regulatory requirements for Good Manufacturing Practice compliance. In 2019, his efforts culminated in securing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to license the product as a biologic, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Mr. Lesnicki's most notable achievement stems from his 21-year tenure at Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia. From 2000 to 2010, he managed the fermentation pilot facility established in honor of Nobel laureate Michael Smith's groundbreaking work in site-directed mutagenesis. The facility supported diverse academic research areas focused on genetics involving bacteria, fungi and other organisms. In addition to overseeing operations, Mr. Lesnicki assisted in teaching courses and conducted professional workshops within the laboratories.
Throughout his career, Mr. Lesnicki has demonstrated expertise in process development and the cultivation of various cell types, including bacteria, fungi, insect cells and mammalian cells, for the production of human therapeutics targeting disease control. He holds three or four patents related to migraine drug processes and has co-authored numerous publications with an estimated 400 to 500 citations acknowledging his contributions. He is also an active member of the American Chemical Society.
Mr. Lesnicki's educational background includes completion of chemical technology coursework at Ryerson University in Toronto. He credits much of his professional success to mentorship received from esteemed colleagues, particularly his supervisor during his time at a starch company and culminated with his professor and supervisor at the University of British Columbia, and from daily interactions with Nobel laureates and leading scientists during his university years. These formative experiences provided him with invaluable guidance and practical knowledge that propelled his career forward.
Born in Toronto to parents who immigrated from Poland to Canada during or shortly after the Second World War, Mr. Lesnicki's personal life reflects a deep appreciation for family heritage and artistic expression. His spouse, Gwen Williamson, is an accomplished artist with a passion for painting, and his daughter Samara Dawn is pioneer in the yoga & fitness industry educating internationally. Outside of his professional pursuits, Mr. Lesnicki enjoys reading scientific publications, gardening, going to the gym and cooking.
Mr. Lesnicki's enduring commitment to advancing biotechnology through innovation, mentorship and collaboration continues to shape scientific progress both nationally and internationally.
