Dr. Johnston, a distinguished wildlife ecologist and bat biologist, has significantly contributed to environmental science. Since his affiliation with H. T. Harvey & Associates in 1997, he has developed innovative strategies to mitigate the impacts of large utility-scale renewable energy projects on bat populations. His expertise in vertebrate and foraging ecology has been instrumental in advancing conservation efforts, particularly through his authorship of the "Final Caltrans Bat Mitigation: A Guide to Developing Feasible and Effective Solutions," published in 2019.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Johnston served as the executive director of the Youth Science Institute from 1979 to 1995, expanding the institute to include three nature centers and significantly increasing its budget. His passion for environmental advocacy was also evident during his time in the classroom as a lecturer at Santa Clara University from 2002 to 2004 and as an adjunct at San Jose State University in the 1990s.
Dr. Johnston's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in biology from California Polytechnic State University and a Master of Science in ecology and evolutionary biology from San Jose State University. He also completed a Doctor of Philosophy in biology at York University in 1997, where renowned bat biologists like Brock Fenton inspired his work.
Throughout his career, Dr. Johnston has been actively involved in high-profile projects, such as assisting Richard Branson with siting wind and solar energy on Necker Island and hosting the 2015 North American Society for Bat Research Conference in Monterey, California. His dedication to science communication is further demonstrated by his leadership role in organizing the "Year of the Bats 2027" event, which involves participants from over 30 countries. Dr. Johnston is also part of the Global Union of Bat Diversity Networks, coordinating efforts with over 240 members worldwide to create a comprehensive online library of informational resources for children and the general public and a catalog featuring public art projects.
As a dedicated community member, Dr. Johnston chaired the library committee for the Montalvo Arts Center. He is also the former president of the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, where he led efforts to protect Mono Lake from water diversion projects.
Dr. Johnston has co-authored numerous publications that have contributed to understanding bat behavior and ecology. These include "Resource Ephemerality Drives Social Foraging in Bats" in 2018 and "Bat Foraging Response to Introduced Fish in the Sierra Nevada" in 2021. His work on sustainability and ecological concepts related to utility-scale solar energy has been widely recognized.
Recognizing his expertise, Dr. Johnston has been awarded many grants as the Principal Investigator, such as grants he received from the California Energy Commission and the Hawaiian Endangered Species Recovery Committee (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Hawaiian Department of Fish and Wildlife). He's recently been a team member of a National Science Foundation grant for testing a three-dimensional thermal camera to observe birds and bats. Currently semi-retired, he continues to pursue stimulating projects related to bat monitoring, developing educational resources on bats, and mitigating wind turbine impacts on bat populations using advanced technologies like three-dimensional thermal cameras and radar systems, Dr. Johnston's ongoing dedication to conservation and education underscores his commitment to making science relevant and accessible worldwide.
