POWAY, CA, September 29, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert Fellmeth, Price Professor of Public Interest Law at the University of San Diego, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Southern California Edition of The Wall Street Journal, published on March 26, 2025.
Celebrating a 45-year career in law, Robert Fellmeth is proud of his accomplishments as an educator and founder of the Children's Advocacy Institute, an initiative at the University of San Diego to educate and train law students on children's representation. Mr. Fellmeth formed the institute in 1980 and immediately began working on legislative issues and reports as the institute's director, work he has continued to the present day.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 1967 and a Juris Doctor in law from Harvard University in 1970, Mr. Fellmeth began working as an associate at the Center for Study of Responsive Law. In 1973, he became the deputy district attorney and assistant United States attorney in the District Attorney's Office and the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego, California. Since 1977, he has served as a Price professor of public interest law at the University of San Diego. That same year, he founded the university's Center for Public Interest Law, where he continues serving as executive director.
As the director of the Children's Advocacy Institute, Mr. Fellmeth has been involved in over 50 significant bills related to child welfare, as well as another 20 statutes and more than 60 cases, some of which involved consumer protection. In addition, he and his team established a Consumer Protection Policy Center and have made significant contributions to regulatory law. One notable achievement is the creation of the first professional independent state bar court to discipline lawyers. Mr. Fellmeth is a prolific author in his field, contributing articles such as "Eight Needed Steps to Save Democracy and Our Future" to The Fulcrum. In addition, he has authored two textbooks, with "Child Rights & Remedies: How the US Legal System Affects Children" being used in 30 law schools. He believes it is essential to focus on children, the future and the public interest in his work.
Mr. Fellmeth considers his most notable achievement to be seeing students graduate from the University of San Diego School of Law with a concentration in child rights, consumer protection or energy policy initiatives. These graduates are now making a difference across the U.S.
Mr. Fellmeth is currently working on a significant case involving social security benefits, of which one of the primary beneficiary groups is children in foster care and those who will leave foster care at 18 or 21. As the median age of self-sufficiency in the country is 26, these children lack the agency to avoid difficult financial situations. Though approximately 40,000 foster children are eligible for support yearly, the funds have been repeatedly embezzled. To benefit these children, Mr. Fellmeth and his team have filed a lawsuit in California and have lobbied for legislative change in Arizona and five other states.
