Ms. Sterner has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting nonprofit entities throughout her career, including Catholic publications and progressive political publications such as In These Times. She was appointed as a consultant by the Lila Wallace Foundation for a three-year project that extended beyond its original scope through collaboration with the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses. The foundation's initiative provided funding and support to small literary publishers, helping them develop business plans and key marketing resources — an endeavor she found both enjoyable and meaningful due to its cultural impact.

Much of Ms. Sterner's success stems from her academic background, which includes coursework toward a master's degree in liberal arts at Hamline University in 1997 and a Bachelor of Arts in English and communications from St. Catherine University in 1980.
