Since 2019, Dr. Bhatnagar has served as a scientist emeritus at the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science at York University in North York, Ontario, Canada. In this capacity, he conducts research in space sciences with a particular focus on optical studies of the ionosphere and upper atmosphere. He actively engages in collaborative projects with institutions and contributes to significant studies in space physics. Maintaining a part-time position allows him to balance his professional commitments while remaining close to his family in Canada.
Earlier in his career, from 2013 to 2018, Dr. Bhatnagar was an adjunct professor in the science faculty at Texas A&M University and Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, Texas. During this period, he contributed to academic programs and mentored students in advanced scientific disciplines. Between 2004 and 2012, he held the role of research professor of space science in the physics department at Alabama A&M University. Similarly, from 2000 to 2003, Dr. Bhatnagar was an adjunct professor of astronomy in the department of computer science, engineering and physics at the University of Michigan in Flint, Michigan. His earlier experience includes serving as a software engineer at Applied Engineering Solutions for Electronic Data Systems (EDS), where he applied his technical skills to software development projects. Prior to this appointment, from 1980 to 2000, Dr. Bhatnagar was a project research scientist at the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science at York University. In this role, he led research efforts that contributed significantly to the understanding of space phenomena.
Likewise, from 1975 to 1979, Dr. Bhatnagar worked as a research scientist in the solar-terrestrial division of the Atmospheric Environment Service of Canada in Toronto. He began his career as a research scientist at the Institute of Astrophysics and Extraterrestrial Research at Bonn University in Bonn, Germany, from 1969 to 1974. In addition to these primary roles, Dr. Bhatnagar held positions as a software analyst and served as a consultant for Northwest Research Associates Inc. in Bellevue, Washington. He also contributed to collaborative projects such as CANOPUS with the Herzberg Astrophysical Institute of the National Research Council in Ottawa, Canada. His professional affiliations include membership with the American Geophysical Union and the Electrical Engineering Society of Canada. He also served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Astrophysics and Space Science.
Dr. Bhatnagar's academic background is extensive. He earned a Professional Engineer designation from Professional Engineers Ontario through the University of Toronto in 1991. Previously, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in space physics at Delhi University in 1967 after obtaining a master's degree in physics from the University of Agra in 1959 and a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics in 1957. He further pursued additional certifications throughout his career, including five certificates from EPCOM Institute at EDS University, a certificate from Franklin Covey's The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People program, an advanced certificate in advanced microcomputer and hardware programming from the AcTE Institute, and an advanced certificate in computer and electronic technology from Ryerson Polytechnical University.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bhatnagar has made substantial scholarly contributions. He has authored or co-authored approximately 60 research papers published across esteemed journals. His work includes significant contributions to two books: "A Handbook of Geophysics, Astrophysics, and Astronomy," published by Austin University in 2002, and "A Handbook of Ionospheric and Geophysical Data," edited for the Radio Science Division at National Physical Laboratory in Delhi, India, in 1962.
Outside his professional pursuits, Dr. Bhatnagar enjoys listening to scientific programs, reading novels, watching classic Hollywood movies and exploring historical documentaries about European civilizations.
