Dr. Hundahl's career of four decades in medicine and surgery is decorated by a series of influential roles, advancements and leadership positions across the United States and internationally. Since 1986, he has served as the co-founder and lifetime director of Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii, now known as CareResource Hawaii, which has grown to become the largest nonprofit home health care agency in Hawaii with more than 200 employees. Located in Honolulu, CareResource Hawaii aids individuals and families in need through services such as physical therapy, speech therapy and private nursing. His vision and commitment to building and developing systems that improve patient care stands as the highlight of his storied professional journey.
Before retiring to focus more fully on CareResource Hawaii, Dr. Hundahl held the title of professor of clinical surgery at the University of California, Davis, where he contributed to academic medicine and mentored future generations of surgeons for nearly 20 years. Concurrently, he was the chief of surgery for the VA Northern California Health Care System within the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. In this capacity, he developed multiple successful clinical collaborations between the VA and the United States Department of Defense, furthering access to quality surgical care for veterans.
Prior to his tenure in California, Dr. Hundahl was an associate clinical professor of surgery at John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1996 to 2002. He also served as an assistant research professor at the Cancer Research Center Hawaii in Honolulu from 1993 to 2002, during which he conducted pioneering research in computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer and explored the use of the Maruyama Index as a surgical quality metric.
For nearly 15 years, Dr. Hundahl maintained a private practice in surgical oncology in Honolulu, providing specialized care to patients while advancing research in adjuvant chemo-radiation for gastric cancer. His leadership in the community extended to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was the chief of surgery from 1994 to 2000 and associate chief of surgery from 1993 to 1995.
Outside of his primary roles, Dr. Hundahl lent his expertise as the medical director at Queen's Cancer Institute from 2000 to 2002. He also held national leadership positions including chair of the Commission on Cancer in Chicago from 1998 to 2000 and vice chair of the National Cancer Data Committee from 1994 to 1996. As a member of the Governing Council for the National Cancer Database from 1995 to 1999 and participant in the Union Internationale Countra Le Cancer International Cancer Data Base Committee from 1995 to 1998, he played a pivotal role in shaping cancer data collection and analysis on both national and international levels.
To share insights and maintain best medical practices, Dr. Hundahl has been actively involved with numerous professional organizations over the years. He served as a trustee for the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association for a decade and was its program chair for general surgery and on the congress planning committee between 1994 and 2001. His equally dedicated service with the American College of Surgeons includes membership on its Board of Governors from 1998 to 2002, participation on its Governor's Committee on Fiscal Affairs from 2001 to 2002, executive committee membership with its Hawaii chapter from 1991 to 2002 and state cancer liaison chairman for Hawaii from 1991 to 1998.
Dr. Hundahl's many achievements in the health care sector have seen him recognized as a fellow by prestigious organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society and the Pacific Coast Surgical Association. His leadership extends into civic life as past president of Sacramento Surgical Society as well as memberships with the American Cancer Society, where he was vice president of the Hawaii-Pacific division and part of a working group that engaged in crucial clinical trials.
Dr. Hundahl laid a strong foundation for his influential medical career with an equally robust education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1977 as well as a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from Yale School of Medicine in 1981, where he also received the Hobart Keese Award. Dedicated to the ideals of continuous learning, he completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Hawaii in 1986, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1988.
Also an accomplished writer and reviewer, Dr. Hundahl contributed to the literary realm as a medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management from 2000 to 2008. Throughout his career, he has authored more than 60 journal articles, 20 book chapters and reviewed manuscripts for multiple professional medical journals, all of which has advanced vital conversations on cancer research, oncology and surgical treatments.
Along with his education, Dr. Hundahl attributes his success to unwavering dedication and a mission-oriented attitude — values instilled by kind and inspiring role models throughout his training. Among those who influenced him most were many fine surgeons such as Charles Judd, MD, FACS, a Yale-trained missionary surgeon whose shining example underscored Dr. Hundahl's belief that mission and service must always take precedence over ego.
Dr. Hundahl's work over the decades has been recognized with numerous honors including Best Doctors in America from 1995 to 2020, being named honorary commander of the 60th Medical Group at Travis Air Force Base and receiving the Joan Oettinger Memorial Award from University of California, Davis School of Medicine in 2009. He was further acknowledged with the Nishi Award for best paper in gastric cancer by the International Gastric Cancer Association in 2008, the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons in 2000 and the Best Presentation Award from the World Health Organization in 1994. Notably, he was also featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America and presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
A happily married man, Dr. Hundahl intends to enjoy his retirement by traveling across Sacramento, Nantucket, Hawaii and Japan while continuing his work with CareResource Hawaii. Throughout his life, he has found fulfillment not only through helping others and advancing the field of medicine but also through the smiles of gratitude and friendship he has encountered throughout his journey.
