He started his lengthy career in the air cargo sector, and joined Lufthansa Cargo in 1970, undertaking many positions in the Cargo department, before moving to Lufthansa flight operations. He gained experience in Supervisory, and Duty Manager roles by the age of 25 years, with many certifications. His bilingual capabilities were highly appreciated as he joined the special flight operations team in the head office, Frankfurt. During this assignment he was assigned to many special flight operations projects worldwide. Laying down the foundation for many emerging airports and airlines in the world, especially Africa in the late 1970's, and early 1980's.
From his early, exciting tenure with Lufthansa, Mr. Rutherford built an extensive career at Saudi Arabian Airlines. He served in many head office managerial positions and created the foundations of the airline's operational and commercial business model, in those years the leading giant of an airline in the Middle East. As the Manager of the Revenue Management team from 1993 to 1997 after holding the role of Manager of Marketing Automation from 1987 to 1993, he created an organization, with the ability to handle continuous leading-edge technology and infrastructure changes, allowing the agility to cope with today's continuous evolutions, such as embracing AI products and digital transformation technology.
In 1997 Mr. Rutherford joined a small private travel consulting company in Houston named PROS. From a small company of less than 70 people, he helped PROS grow into the giant global IT products company it is today, listed on the NYSE. It is the biggest global supplier to multiple industries for science-based pricing products.
During his tenure at PROS, Mr. Rutherford led a landmark project with the Qualiflyer group of airlines Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines and Sabena and others in the 1990s that became a defining achievement of his career. Tasked with rescuing a failed Origin and Destination revenue management system initiative for the entire Qualiflyer groups of airlines, he implemented a dynamic approach that bridged cultural differences and ensured all deadlines were met. The success of this project not only solidified PROS's reputation across Europe but also enabled the company to weather the economic downturn in America in 2000.
Mr. Rutherford continued to manage many vast projects around the world with huge airlines, such Emirates, Qatar Airways and Thai Airways, to name a few. From 2011 to 2020, Mr. Rutherford was the regional vice president of travel sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at PROS in Dubai. He previously served as the Regional Vice President of Professional Services at PROS from 1997 to 2011, working across Houston, Zurich, Bangkok, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and many other destinations. His success with Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, and FlyDubai cannot be understated, and created profitability for all these major global airlines, as well as huge rewards for PROS, with PROS expanding year upon year during this period of time
Mr. Rutherford's professional journey is complemented by his active membership in the Professional Pricing Society of America since 2000. He is also recognized as an author and public speaker, sharing insights drawn from decades of industry experience. His academic background includes a bachelor's degree in business administration and management from The Open University in London in 1975.
Mr. Rutherford has pursued continuous professional development through numerous certifications relevant to airline operations and technology integration. Notable credentials include revenue management user and system administrator certification from PROS, advanced load planning from British Airways, and MS Project independent trainer from Saudi Arabian Airlines, as well as multiple certifications related to Microsoft Office applications, departure control systems and airport security. These qualifications have enabled him to remain at the forefront of technological advancements within the aviation sector.
Mr. Rutherford attributes his enduring success to an insatiable curiosity and commitment to staying ahead of industry trends, a philosophy shaped by his early fascination with aircraft while growing up near London Heathrow Airport. This passion together with his desire for global travel led him into aviation at a young age and propelled him into senior roles at major airlines and consultancy engagements worldwide.
In recent years and to compliment his corporate achievements, Mr. Rutherford is now an accomplished author with a diverse portfolio that includes children's literature such as the five star series Madooree and Basil The Fireman Dragon, Magic Garden – Leninsky Prospect Park – Transformations and Mynewta - The Hummingbird. All of these series are written for young children to ignite their imaginations, as well as listening in those quiet moments with parents or more mature readers. Mr. Rutherford has also written series for young adults, stories of moral value, and of the coming of age, such as five-star series; Rebecca and The Idiom Series plus Fobia Force. In the adult genre he has written series named Cupid's Chronicles; Chronicles of a Working Life and Reflecting on Days of Future Past. In August of 2025, he wrote his second full adult novel, Seven Cats of Kubbeli Evler, which was entered in the renowned Amazon KDP Storyteller 2025 competition. As of today, he has published 60 titles on Amazon, and other major online bookstores, including seven children's and young adult series, four more adult series, and four full length novels. He has already gained awards for his writing and publishes short stories to competitions each week.
Born in London, Mr. Rutherford enjoys writing as both a creative outlet and a means of sharing knowledge gained regarding his interesting and extensive career. He remains content with his accomplishments and continues to pursue new children's stories, interesting and creative fiction, plus essays and short stories about his previous professional life.
