COLLEGE STATION, TX, October 17, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kevin Burgess, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Burgess established a distinguished career in organic chemistry, marked by nearly four decades of academic leadership, research innovation and educational impact. Since 1992, he served as a professor and Rachal Professor, then Gradipore Chair in chemistry at Texas A&M University, where he leads a research group focused on organic and biomedicinal chemistry. In this capacity, Dr. Burgess teaches undergraduate organic chemistry, instructs advanced undergraduate courses on synthesis and medicinal chemistry, and educates graduate students on organic reactions and biomedical chemistry. His guidance has shaped careers of numerous students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom made significant contributions to his laboratory's achievements, and went on to make notable achievements themselves.
Among Dr. Burgess' contributions as a researcher has been developing innovative systems for peptide-mimic synthesis, particularly pioneering methods for manipulating both N-terminus and C-termini of peptides. His groundbreaking strategies on the C-terminus have introduced novel approaches to helical mimics that were previously unreported in the scientific literature. Dr. Burgess's work on a mimic of nerve growth factor afforded a led which progressed to Phase 3 clinical trials for treatment of dry eye disease. Additionally, he made significant contributions to fluorescent dye chemistry with a focus on BODIPY compounds, further highlighting his diverse scientific interests.
Beyond his work in academia, Dr. Burgess has been instrumental as the president of Bylnquisition Press since 2010, where he oversees the publication of educational materials and resources that support education of students in the chemical sciences.
Before joining the faculty at Texas A&M University, Dr. Burgess was an assistant professor at Rice University (1987 – 1992). During this period, he began establishing his reputation as a scholar, focusing on peptide mimics and organometallic catalysis, particularly catalyzed hydroborations, and paving the way for a remarkable career in academia.
A graduate of the University of Cambridge, Dr. Burgess earned a Doctor of Philosophy in organometallics. Subsequently, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, which provided advanced training that would inform his future research directions.
Beyond his education, Dr. Burgess is recognized as a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in Britain and maintains active membership in the American Chemical Society. These affiliations reflect his standing within the international scientific community. For forty years Dr. Burgess was co-author of "Highlights" in Chemistry and Industry, an ongoing publication series initiated in 1985 that disseminates key developments in chemical research to a broad audience.
Throughout his career, Dr. Burgess has received numerous honors recognizing his research excellence and scholarly impact. He received a National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award, A Sloan Fellowship, The Distinguished Achievement Award in Research from the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students in 2010, The Pedler Award and a fellowship from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2013, a Humboldt Fellowship, and two awards from the Fulbright Foundation.
Dr. Burgess credits much of his success to the dedication and hard work of his graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, particularly those from outside the US including China, Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, and Europe, whose contributions have been integral to the progress of his laboratory. Looking ahead, he aims to complete his current research, an electronic workbook designed to benefit undergraduate students and ensure its widespread adoption as a practical learning tool. Once he concludes his research career, Dr. Burgess intends to dedicate more attention to his YouTube channel and explore topics related to psychology in education, and areas of interest in science more generally.
