Before joining Hershey, Dr. Charles held the position of Zone Sales Director at Frito-Lay from 2005 to 2007, where he oversaw regional operations and contributed to strategic growth initiatives. From 2002 to 2005, he served as tri-state Division Learning Manager at Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., focusing on leadership development and training programs for employees across multiple states. His earlier roles at Coca-Cola included serving as Sales Center Manager from 2000 to 2002 and Sales Manager from 1999 to 2000, where he refined his skills in people management and corporate negotiations.
Dr. Charles entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch Thirst No More, a vending enterprise that provided valuable lessons in business strategy and personal growth. Initially prioritizing rapid expansion through quantity, he later recognized the importance of quality over scale, a realization shaped by operational challenges and repair costs. This experience remains a significant chapter in his professional journey.

He also holds a Master of Arts in religious studies from Ashland Theological Seminary, A Graduate Division of Ashland University in Ohio, a Master of Arts in Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science in Interpersonal Communication and Business Administration from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Dr. Charles initial inspiration came from a family legacy in education and an early desire to become a history teacher. Although his career began in sales with companies such as Pepsi-Cola, Coca-Cola, Faygo Beverages, Frito-Lay, and Hershey, these experiences ultimately led him to teaching, this time at the college level, where he combined his educational passion with corporate expertise.
