Highly educated in her field, Ms. Souza earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from West Virginia State University in 1980 and a Master of Science in geology, stratigraphy and paleoecology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985. Her early interest in science was nurtured by an inspiring high school biology teacher and a lifelong curiosity about how things work, particularly in the context of space exploration and exobiology. Although she initially pursued studies related to exobiology at the University of Pittsburgh, Ms. Souza ultimately found her calling in geology after discovering that other subjects, such as celestial mechanics, were not the right fit for her interests.

Ms. Souza is an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the Geological Society of America and the National Ground Water Association.
