Dr. Martha Crawford is an accomplished executive and board director with some 30 years of experience helping to grow companies in environmental infrastructure, in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America. After a distinguished career working as a Chief Technology Officer, heading up global Research & Development, and technology commercialization for multinational corporations in energy, industrial gases and specialty chemicals, she now serves as independent director and senior advisor to companies specialized in low-carbon energies and environmental services.
Early in her career, Dr. Crawford held senior executive roles in research and development and innovation at Orano from 2011 until 2015 and at Air Liquide from 2007 to 2011, helping to scale and deploy technologies that contributed to both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Between 1998 and 2007, she worked at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development as the principal administrator in the Environmental Performance and Information Division. She gained foundational experience in environmental infrastructure as an advisor to the general manager at the Republic of the Marshall Islands Environmental Protection Authority (RMIEPA) from 1990 until 1993.
From 2010 to 2021, Dr. Crawford served on the boards of several multi-national companies in France, including Seppic Chemicals, Air Liquide Sante International, Suez SA, Altran (now CapGemini) and Ipsen Pharmaceuticals. She also previously served on the boards of the French national scientific labs (CNRS), the French national energy labs (CEA), the French national agency for research (ANR), and the International Risk Governance Council (IRGC). In recognition of her contributions to science and industry, she was named Dame of the French National Order of Merit by President Nicolas Sarkozy of France in 2012.
Since 2021, Dr. Crawford has worked as an Operating Partner at Macquarie Asset Management, focusing on US-based portfolio companies in waste management. She also works as a senior advisor to other large private equity firms active in environmental infrastructure, including Partners Group and Blue Wolf Capital. Since 2023, she has also been elected Independent Director for three US publicly listed companies in low-carbon energy: Blink Charging, Houston American Energy Corporation, and Terra Innovatum, and one Australian multi-national company called GHD Consulting.
Laying the groundwork for Dr. Crawford's professional pursuits was her academic background. Fully funded by a National Science Foundation Fellowship, she earned a Master of Science in chemical engineering from Harvard University in 1994, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental engineering from the same institution in 1997. She then furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration in strategy and finance from the Paris Collège des Ingénieurs in 1998. Marking her pivot into working with private equity funds, she earned an executive certificate in venture capital and private equity finance from Columbia Business School in 2022.
Throughout her career, Dr. Crawford has been recognized for helping to launch innovative start-ups such as AREVA Med and Terra Innovatum. Additionally, she is an active member of several industry organizations, including the National Association of Corporate Directors and Women Corporate Directors. In addition to her professional endeavors, Dr. Crawford currently serves as a board member of the Kearney Energy Transition Institute and the Health Effects Institute, and is an advisory council member for Harvard Business Review.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Crawford attributes her success to strong humanist values instilled by her parents during her upbringing as one of 12 children. Raised with an emphasis on giving back, creating value and supporting others, she developed resilience and a collaborative spirit that have shaped her approach to leadership. Having grown up near the Mexican border, holding American and French citizenship, and having lived and worked for decades on three continents, Dr. Crawford has a unique capacity to work across cultures and geographies. Coupled with her executive presence and excellence as a communicator and business leader, she is a highly effective advisor and director.
Dr. Crawford finds fulfillment in helping board members and members of the executive leadership team understand that sustainability efforts such as emissions reduction and energy efficiency are financially beneficial for organizations. Looking ahead, she looks forward to the day when environmental sustainability has become so fully integrated into standard business practices that it no longer requires separate discussion or justification.
