Mr. Johnson's distinguished career in engineering and technology spans more than four decades and is marked by innovation and a commitment to advancing analytical and control systems. Most recently, he served as lead embedded design engineer at Draper Laboratory from 2009 to 2020, overseeing the development of embedded systems for highly confidential projects requiring advanced security clearance. Notably, Mr. Johnson's work supported special agencies and involved the integration of cutting-edge technologies into secure environments, where confidentiality and proprietary considerations were paramount. Each of the many projects he engaged in was at the very forefront of technology, with focus on delivering functional product to customers.

Before accepting his appointment with Draper Laboratory, Mr. Johnson contributed significantly to Myvu Corporation between 2000 and 2009 as a senior design engineer. In this capacity, he contributed to the advancement of consumer based wearable visual devices. He functionally developed the crystal product line—a situationally-aware binocular headset compatible with portable video devices (eg iPods) widely used by travelers. Prior to that, when the company identified as MicroOptical Corp, he had a pivotal role in the development of monocular head-mounted display technology, focusing on solutions for medical professionals. Among his significant achievements was the creation of a wireless head-mounted display for anesthesiologists, which enabled physicians to monitor—in real time—a patient's vital signs while allowing freedom to move about in operating room environments. Mr. Johnson solved challenges related to wireless video transmission, leveraging emerging Bluetooth technology that ensured interference-free functionality within hospital settings.

From 1986 to 2000, Mr. Johnson thrived as a senior engineer at Bio-Rad Laboratories, contributing meaningfully to analytical instrumentation, including the invention of a commercially deployable step scan interferometry capability within a conventional rapid-scan infrared spectrometer. This resulted in a revolutionary product that advanced analytical capabilities in research labs around the world. A stepping stone to this patented achievement was his development of a sustained self-aligning Michelson interferomer design that allowed spectral ranges of spectrometers to be rapidly changed. Additionally, Mr. Johnson successfully developed electronics for a high dynamic range cryogenic infrared detector, transforming its strongly nonlinear output into a photometrically linear signal, thereby rendering quantitatively accurate infrared spectrum when used in a Fourier Transform spectrometer.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Johnson worked as a senior designer at Analogic from 1984 to 1986, where he collaborated on the production of advanced digitizing converters used in medical CT scanners. His foundational professional experience included a tenure with Northrop Grumman from 1977 to 1984, where he progressed through a series of roles as an engineer, senior engineer and member of technical staff. He contributed to all aspects in the development, including analysis and design of control electronics, and developing a mass production facility for a novel dry-tuned two-degree of freedom gyroscope. While at the company, Mr. Johnson recognized the importance of internal publishing for knowledge sharing within the company, and for documenting important proprietary techniques that are critical to transforming science into manufacturable technology.

Exceptional academic credentials further define Mr. Johnson's profile. He earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical and electronics engineering at Brown University in 1977, and he credits this training with equipping him with essential learning skills that have remained invaluable throughout his career. Although he recognizes that much of the technical knowledge acquired during his studies shifted due to rapid technological advancements, he prioritized continuous learning to maintain relevance in his field.

Mr. Johnson's decision to pursue engineering stemmed from a desire for hands-on experience in electronics design and an interest in developing practical solutions with real-world impact—a motivation that shaped his early work on inertial navigation systems and guided his lifelong dedication to innovation. Throughout his career, Mr. Johnson has maintained active membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, reflecting a persistent commitment to ongoing professional development and industry engagement.

Mr. Johnson is a proud father to a daughter who pursued chemical engineering at Brown University before earning a scholarship for doctoral studies at Stanford University and one son who is an ultrasound sonographer in the medical sector. Mr. Johnson cherishes spending quality time with his wife, who dedicated her career to early childhood education as a kindergarten teacher, and he is excited that his granddaughter exhibits notable musical talent, matching his own passion as a musician throughout his school years.

In retirement, Mr. Johnson and his wife continue to foster their shared commitment to community service through extensive volunteer work with nonprofit organizations and church programs. He also remains actively engaged by serving on two boards, and as volunteer Treasurer for his church. Looking toward the future, Mr. Johnson is focused on deepening his involvement within the Rockport community. He is deploying a means to share excess electricity from a large solar array at his church, while rendering extra revenue. He hopes this will be a model for other deployments in the community to increasingly incentivize renewable energy.
