From 1999 to 2023, Ms. Leyva was a teacher at St. Margaret Mary School in Lomita, California. Over more than two decades, she became known for her innovative teaching methods and dedication to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
Before her time at St. Margaret Mary School, Ms. Leyva spent 10 years as a teacher at Holy Family School in Wilmington and St. Philomena School in Carson. There, she laid the foundation for her career by developing effective teaching strategies and building strong relationships with students and colleagues alike.
Ms. Leyva's academic background includes a bachelor's degree in education from California State University, Long Beach. This formal training provided her with a solid foundation in pedagogical theory and practice, equipping her to address the diverse needs of her students throughout her career. In 2000, Ms. Leyva further enhanced her qualifications by earning a certification for special education tutoring from the Los Angeles Unified School District. This credential enabled her to provide specialized support to students with unique learning requirements.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Leyva is civically engaged as a donor to pet shelters and veterans' organizations, reflecting her commitment to giving back to the community.
Encouraged by her parents, who made significant sacrifices to support her college education, and inspired by teachers who recognized her potential, Ms. Leyva's passion for working with children was solidified through volunteer work at local elementary schools early on. Throughout her career, she has been recognized not only for her teaching but also for her contributions to educational research and community engagement. She was awarded a grant from the Milken Foundation to study California Indian studies, an area in which she has since become an expert. She also received an Eisenhower Grant to study science environmental studies.
During her tenure at St. Margaret Mary School, Ms. Leyva received several prestigious honors, including the Disney Teacher of the Year award in 2006 and the Teacher of the Year Golden Apple Award from the Lomita Chamber of Commerce in both 2010 and 2023. These accolades reflect her exceptional ability to inspire students and her unwavering commitment to educational excellence.
Ms. Leyva attributes much of her success to a genuine love of teaching and sharing knowledge with others.
