BRONX, NY, October 30, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Jacob Kamen, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kamen celebrates many years' experience in his professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
He immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s with no family or money. He worked minimum wage jobs at night to support himself while attending college during the day. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the Polytechnic University in New York City, Dr. Kamen began working as a teaching assistant with Professor Melkonian (who was not only part of the Manhattan Project, but also a student of Enrico Fermi) at Columbia University. He spent several years at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) as a research collaborator and received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Columbia University in 1992. Dr. Kamen also holds several professional credentials, including certification from the American Board of Health Physics or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), certification as a medical laser safety officer (CMLSO), and certification in a National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT).
Dr. Kamen, an expert in the field of health physics, has devoted his career to the field, marked by nearly three decades of leadership. Since 2007, he has served as a professor of radiology, senior director of radiation safety and chief radiation and laser safety officer at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. In addition to lecturing, Dr. Kamen oversees radiation safety operations across all Mount Sinai system hospitals, which is the largest health care institution in the U.S. His responsibilities include ensuring regulatory compliance, managing radioactive waste, maintaining equipment standards and guiding medical professionals in safe practices.
Dr. Kamen's dedication to discipline and perseverance distinguishes him among his peers, and he has become widely regarded for his ability to overcome obstacles through determination and innovative thinking. His reputation as a subject matter expert has led to invitations as a speaker for the International Atomic Energy Agency and appearances on major media outlets, such as the New York Daily News, Fox News and NBC in Seattle, where he provided expert commentary on incidents including the Fukushima accident and the Harborview incident at the University of Washington.
Contributing extensively to professional literature, Dr. Kamen has authored more than 23 articles, six book chapters, three technical reports and 20 abstracts. His work continues to influence best practices in radiation safety and health physics. He has been a faculty member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine for the last 25 years, as well as a former faculty member at New York University and Manhattan College.
He became a national champion for cesium irradiator replacement and was a key voice of experience for a 2015 series of workshops in Atlanta, San Francisco, and New York, as well as meetings in London and Vienna. He was critical in helping build relationships between the hospital community and law enforcement to drive efforts towards advancing alternate technologies.
Recognized for his work, Dr. Kamen received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Homeland Security Section of the Health Physics Society in 2023. Looking ahead, he intends to continue recruiting and training emerging professionals, sharing the knowledge gained from his extensive experience to advance health physics. Dr. Kamen's legacy is defined by his relentless pursuit of excellence, his contributions to public safety and his commitment to shaping the future of his profession. He helps build our next generation of health physicists by recruiting recent graduates and training them to be CHPs and radiation safety officers.
Actively engaged in research, Dr. Kamen is presently involved in a research study of the bone marrow ablation in mice, comparing X-rays and gamma rays to help researchers migrate to alternative technologies. He is also involved in developing a method to accurately measure the dose from radioactive inhalation and ingestion to victims of dirty bombs (radioactive dispersal devices) in congested cities, which would help clinicians to treat the victims.
