Dr. Hamilton has established a distinguished career spanning 54 years, marked by expertise in communications and digital media. For the past 11 years, he has served as professor of communications at Texas A&M University, Central Texas and Southern New Hampshire University, where he teaches technology, humanities and communication courses. His commitment to education and innovation is evident in his approach to curriculum development and student engagement.
Since 2014, Dr. Hamilton has also held the role of adjunct faculty in graduate-level studies and communication at Texas A&M University. In this capacity, he has contributed to the academic growth of graduate students, sharing his extensive knowledge in literature, film studies and digital media.
From 2005 to 2020, Dr. Hamilton was an English professor at Northeast Texas Community College. During this tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the English department's curriculum and mentoring students. His dedication to fostering critical thinking and communication skills left a lasting impact on the institution.
In 2004 to 2005, Dr. Hamilton taught at Mount Pleasant High School, followed by two years as a teacher at Longview High School in Longview, Texas, from 2002 to 2004. He began his secondary education teaching career at Liberty-Eylau Middle School in 2001-2002, where he focused on language arts instruction.
Before his work in education, Dr. Hamilton served as senior communication specialist at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center within the Houston Public Library from 1989 to 1997. In this role, he made significant contributions as a photographic conservator and archivist. Notably, he discovered and restored glass plates from World War I that were donated to the Houston Metropolitan Research Center. Employing innovative restoration methods, he separated and restored these plates, producing prints previously unknown even to the Library of Congress.
From 1985 to 1989, Dr. Hamilton was editor and photographer for the Hughes Tool Division of Baker-Hughes Corporation in Houston. His work involved documenting industrial processes and contributing visual content for corporate publications and advertising and research photography.
Between 1978 and 1985, Dr. Hamilton operated as the owner of Chuck Hamilton, Photojournalist. This entrepreneurial venture allowed him to further hone his skills in photography and journalism while building a reputation for creative storytelling through images.
From 1977 to 1978, he served as sports editor for the Mount Pleasant Tribune, where he was responsible for coverage of local athletic events and community sports news. The previous year, from 1976 to 1977, Dr. Hamilton was editor of the South Arkansas News-Press in Monticello, Arkansas.
Dr. Hamilton's professional journey began as a news photographer and writer for the El Dorado News-Times in El Dorado, Arkansas, from 1975 to 1976. Throughout his early career in journalism, he became known for staging impactful photographs that prompted civic action, a testament to his ability to leverage media for the public good.
Dr. Hamilton's academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping his multifaceted career. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in English with an emphasis in literature and film studies from Texas A&M University in 2013—a milestone achieved at age 63 that stands as one of his proudest accomplishments. He completed coursework in communication at the University of Missouri in 2006 and received a Master of Arts in English with a minor in reading from Texas A&M University-Texarkana in 2004. His foundational training includes a Bachelor of Arts in industrial and scientific photography from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, in 1975 and a Bachelor of Science in journalism and graphic arts from East Texas State University in 1973. He also completed coursework at Stephen F. Austin State University between 1969 and 1970.
Dr. Hamilton holds a secondary teaching certification in language arts from Texas A&M University, awarded in 2001. This credential enabled him to transition into secondary education roles where he inspired students through innovative teaching methods.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hamilton has been recognized for excellence with honors such as the Silver Beaver Award from Scouting America—an acknowledgment of his longstanding commitment as a scout leader spanning over three decades.
He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Film Institute, the Association of Adaptation Studies, the Modern Language Association, the College English Association, the Conference of College Composition and Communication, the Film and History Association, the Literature/Film Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association, Sigma Tau Delta, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, the Southwest Commission on Religious Studies, the Southwest PC/ACA and the Texas Community College Teachers Association.
Dr. Hamilton's influence extends beyond academia into civic engagement and creative pursuits. He has served as chair of the Wesley Fellowship Foundation since 2021 and has dedicated over thirty years as a scout leader with Scouting America. His philanthropic efforts include fundraising for organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and the Texas Shakespeare Festival. Additionally, he volunteers with the Methodist Church.
As an author and scholar, Dr. Hamilton has contributed several notable publications such as "Finding Value Through 'Personal Baggage,'" "Clint Eastwood's Cinema of Trauma: Essays on PTSD in the Director's Films," "The Eastwood Agenda in the Adaptation of White Hunter, Black Heart," featured in "The Silk Road of Adaptation: Transformations across Disciplines and Cultures" and "Recasting the Past in the Personal Present: History, Film, and Adaptation," published in Adapting History. Similarly, he authored "Creating a Culture of Fear Through Fake News and Social Media Manipulation" and "Paranoia Through Adaptation: Blending the Fear of a Conspiracy Culture with the Confusion of a Technology Culture." He has lectured internationally, including online sessions for Arabic professors in Jordan and presentations delivered in Turkey, and served as panel chair at Southwest Popular Culture Association conferences until the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Hamilton attributes his success to unwavering support from his wife Judy, whom he married in 1972, and their family. Raised in Naples, TX, with few local examples pursuing higher education, he found inspiration through mentors such as Robert Ward and Nolan Bailey at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University–Commerce) as well as through academic excellence at Brooks Institute of Photography.
He is motivated by helping others achieve their educational goals, particularly through workforce programs offered by community colleges, and believes that focusing on service is essential within education.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Hamilton enjoys fly fishing, spending time with friends and cherishing moments with family, including children Michael Collin ("Mike") and Mary Katherine ("Kate"). Looking ahead, he plans to publish additional books, including one about historic San Antonio missions accompanied by poetry. He also aims to release both his dissertation work and a collection of short stories while continuing to participate in academic conferences such as those hosted by Southwest PCA.
