Prior to this role, Dr. Yang contributed as a staff process development engineer in cell manufacturing engineering at Tesla from 2020 to 2021 and as a senior process development engineer from 2019 to 2020. In these positions, he played a pivotal role in advancing material innovations and scaling up new technologies for high-volume production.
Before joining Tesla, Dr. Yang worked as a battery engineer in cell design at SF Motors Inc. in 2018. There, he developed electrodes and helped establish a pilot line for material development to support future electric vehicle products. His earlier experience includes serving as a battery design engineer at ADVANO from 2017 to 2018, where he focused on material innovations aimed at improving battery capacity.
Dr. Yang's entrepreneurial spirit was evident during his participation as an I-Corps entrepreneur lead with the National Science Foundation from 2016 to 2017. The I-Corps Entrepreneur Lead Program encouraged him to conduct market research and assess product-market fit for promising research with startup potential, a formative experience he regards as highly valuable.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Yang has been widely recognized for his pioneering work in advanced materials and renewable energy technologies. Dr. Yang's educational background has been instrumental in shaping his expertise. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, in 2017, where his doctoral studies focused on renewable energy and advanced materials for batteries and fuel cells. He also holds a Master of Science in materials science and engineering from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, awarded in 2013, and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, completed in 2011.
