Mr. Banvard has established himself through a distinguished career in architecture, marked by his role as the managing principal at Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh, AIA, headquartered in Santa Monica, California. With over 40 years of experience, he has been instrumental in designing a diverse range of residential buildings, including multi-family, senior care, mixed-use and single-family homes. Mr. Banvard's expertise extends to masterplanning, retail and commercial projects, with a particular focus on high-density urban infill buildings and affordable housing solutions.
A journey with Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh, AIA that began in 1985, Mr. Banvard's initial years with the firm allowed him to refine his skills in residential and mixed-use projects, laying the groundwork for his future leadership roles. In 1994, he became a principal and shareholder at the firm, where he continued to expand his influence and expertise in complex building design. In 1998 Mr. Banvard expanded his firm's practice by opening an office in Denver, Colorado and in 2000 added an office in San Jose, California. His commitment to innovative design and sustainable development across many regions of the country has been a driving force behind the firm's success.
As the firm's managing principal, Mr. Banvard has played a pivotal role in shaping the firm's strategic direction. Under his leadership, the firm has been involved in the design and construction of over 200,000 residences and numerous other projects. His dedication to mentoring young architects has been a hallmark of his career. Mr. Banvard believes that while architecture schools provide a solid foundation, proper architectural skills are honed through practice in a professional setting. This commitment to mentorship has enabled him to guide dozens of employees in developing their skills. Through his mentoring, Mr. Banvard is dedicated to ensuring the enduring success of his firm by implementing a thoughtful succession plan that includes this process of mentoring talented architects for future leadership roles.
Mr. Banvard's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in architecture from The Ohio State University. Beyond his education, his recognition as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and, at times, a member of both the Urban Land Institute and the Congress for New Urbanism has enabled him to remain at the forefront of his industry.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Banvard is deeply committed to philanthropy and community service. He most recently founded Build Back Better LA with his colleagues in response to the devastating fires in Southern California, bringing together a collaborative of design and construction professionals to assist families who lost their homes and much more. The organization operates on the basis of a 'word-of-mouth' outreach and is currently assisting around 30 families in rebuilding their lives. Mr. Banvard's willingness to reduce fees and contribute to this effort reflects his deep sense of community responsibility. For many years, he has served his Malibu neighborhood of Ramirez Canyon as a board member of the Homeowners Association.
Widely recognized for his expertise, Mr. Banvard attributes his success to the immense support of his wife Rachael and their children Regan and Riley and the determination and hard work instilled in him during his college years. This academic experience drives his desire to support educational institutions through scholarships and notable gifts at both Washington University in St. Louis, at which both of his children matriculated, and his Alma Mater, The Ohio State University, where he also funded an endowment for the Livesey Teaching Award and a gift that created the Banvard Gallery within Knowlton Hall, the School of Architecture Building. Additionally, he supports several other educational and health-related institutions.
