In 2003, Ms. Nicholson was encouraged by her broker to assist him in California, where she had family ties in Los Angeles. She relocated and worked there until 2008, when two senior team members left to establish their own firm. Due to contractual obligations, she returned to Belleville, Illinois, continuing her work until her client moved his account. After overcoming several challenges during this period, she returned to Los Angeles later that year.

The landscape shifted again in 2012 when Merrill Lynch was acquired by First Republic Bank. Employees were required to remain due to ownership interests until 2019, when two senior partners launched Evoke Advisors. At this juncture, Ms. Nicholson chose to join the company but remained in Belleville, where she worked remotely. This transition allowed her to reconnect with family while maintaining professional responsibilities.
