CLEVELAND, OH, November 07, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jeffrey M. Yarus, PhD, research professor with Case Western Reserve University, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the September 2025 Cleveland, Ohio, regional issue of TIME magazine.
A pioneering figure in the field of applied geostatistics, Dr. Yarus currently serves as a research professor in the department of material sciences and engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). Since joining CWRU in 2019 as an adjunct professor and rising to the rank of research professor in 2020, Dr. Yarus has brought a unique fusion of industrial insight and academic rigor to his teachings and research. His scholarly pursuits extend across petroleum geostatistics, geothermal resource evaluation and environmental process modeling, where he has consistently demonstrated intellectual breadth and a passion for advancing sustainable solutions.
Prior to entering academia full-time, Dr. Yarus built a distinguished 47-year career in the energy sector. He culminated his industry tenure as a senior technology fellow at Halliburton, where he played a key role in strategic innovation and software development. Before that, he was managing partner at Quantitative Geosciences LLP, a firm he co-founded and ultimately sold to Halliburton. His leadership roles also spanned Marathon Oil Company, Smedvig Technologies/Roxar Inc., and Geomath Inc., where he directed North and Latin American reservoir modeling initiatives. His early career began at Amoco Production Company in 1978, setting the stage for decades of impact in both upstream petroleum and geoscientific computing.
Dr. Yarus is widely recognized for his contributions to geostatistical education and thought leadership. He authored foundational works, including the first edited volume on applied geostatistics for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and co-authored the inaugural chapter on geostatistics for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) handbook. His research has been featured in journals such as The Leading Edge, the Journal of Petroleum Technology, and the Journal of Sedimentary Petrology. His work bridges technical mastery with the clarity of communication — a rare combination that has shaped the field's academic and industrial trajectory.
Now contemplating the next chapter, Dr. Yarus intends to transition from his formal university role to spend more time with his family while continuing to mentor and contribute selectively to projects that align with his values. He attributes his professional success not merely to ambition or opportunity but to a deep and abiding love of science, a commitment to intellectual honesty and a belief that applied research can make the world both smarter and better. He notes, "I never saw this as just a job. I pursued the things I believed in — where I could create, teach and make a difference. That's what gave it meaning."
EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Yarus' educational journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in geology from The College of Wooster in 1973. He went on to earn both a Master of Science and a PhD in mathematical geology from the University of South Carolina by 1978. His academic foundation also includes undergraduate coursework at the University of Durham (UK) and graduate study at Michigan State University — evidence of an insatiable curiosity and international perspective that continues to inform his work.
AWARD HIGHLIGHTS
Among his accolades, Dr. Yarus was honored with the George Matheron Lecture Award in 2016 by the International Association of Mathematical Geosciences, one of the discipline's most prestigious recognitions. He also holds multiple patents in the domain of geostatistical modeling and decision support systems.
