Since 2012, she served as senior health scientist on the Traumatic Brain Injury Team in the Division of Injury Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In this capacity, she has led significant projects, including authoring a congressional report on managing traumatic brain injuries in children. This achievement stands as her most notable professional milestone, accomplished through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team comprising medical experts, educators and public health professionals. The report was further strengthened by input from an advisory board of parents and individuals living with brain injuries. Her responsibilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also include reviewing manuscripts, writing papers about traumatic brain injury and engaging with collaborators through webinars and virtual meetings.
Concurrently, Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa has held the position of adjunct faculty in the School of Medicine at Emory University since 2010. Her academic role allows her to contribute to the education of future clinicians and researchers while maintaining active involvement in ongoing research initiatives. Prior to these appointments, she served as principal investigator for a longitudinal study funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, where she advanced understanding of long-term outcomes following pediatric brain injury.
Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa began her professional journey as a speech-language pathologist, co-authoring her first textbook in 1985, titled Head Injury Rehabilitation: Children and Adolescents. Her early clinical experiences provided a foundation for her later research endeavors, emphasizing the importance of direct patient care in shaping effective advocacy and scientific inquiry. Over the years, she has published several influential articles that have contributed to advancements in her field.
Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa's academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology from Georgia State University, earned in 2009. She completed her master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980 after receiving her bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University in 1977. She is currently a fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM).
Her expertise is recognized through numerous leadership roles within professional organizations. Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa serves as advisory board member for the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, the Journal of Clinical Medicine and the Journal of School Health. Additionally, she is a board member of the Health and Safety Advisory Council for the National Council of Youth Sports and vice chair of the Georgia RSVP Clinic. Within the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, she is a member of the Brain Injury Special Interest Group and chairs the Pediatric Adolescent Task Force.
Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa's commitment to service extends beyond her primary field through civic engagement as vice chair for a free clinic serving uninsured people in Georgia and as a board member for the YMCA.
Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa's contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Robert L. Moody Prize for Distinguished Initiatives in Brain Injury in 2025, the William Fields Caveness Award from the Brain Injury Association of America in 2021, a Lecture Award from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine in 2020, the Michael W. Davis Advocacy Award from the North American Brain Injury Society, the Clinician of the Year Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Commission Pathfinder Award from the Brain and Spinal Injury Trust Fund Commission. She credits her achievements to the unwavering support of her family and colleagues as well as her willingness to advocate for critical issues within her profession.
Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Haarbauer-Krupa enjoys exercising, biking, swimming and spending time with family, including her three sons and five grandchildren. Looking ahead, she remains focused on enhancing care and support for children who experience brain injuries and their families by continuing her advocacy efforts to ensure access to insurance coverage and essential resources for recovery.
