FRANKFORT, NY, November 11, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael A. Oriolo has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Currently serving as provost of Herkimer County Community College since 2012, Mr. Oriolo has led a remarkable career of over four decades in higher education. In this capacity, he has contributed to advancements in academic programs, curriculum development and the negotiation of contracts with various bargaining units on campus. His comprehensive understanding of the State University of New York system has positioned him as a longstanding leader in academic policy and procedure.

As provost, Mr. Oriolo is pivotal in balancing the needs of faculty, student services and finance, always prioritizing the academic mission and student success above all else. Recognized for his ability to collaborate across campus constituencies, he takes great care in treating his students and colleagues with respect and ensuring that everyone, including student-athletes, receives the support they need to excel inside and outside the classroom.

Prior to reaching his current role at Herkimer, Mr. Oriolo served as a mathematics and computer science faculty, division chair and associate dean from 1981 to 2012. During this period, he was responsible for overseeing the math, science and physical education departments, later expanding his leadership to include the business division. His administrative career began when he was selected to fill in for a colleague on sabbatical, marking the start of a series of successful appointments to key leadership positions.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Oriolo has maintained a strong connection to teaching, instructing at least one class each year until 2023 and pioneering the development of online math courses at his institution. His commitment to student engagement is further reflected in his monthly meetings with students as a board member of the Faculty Student Association as well as his luncheons with student leaders.

Mr. Oriolo's early career included eight years as a mathematics teacher at Frankfort-Schuyler High School, New York, following two years of teaching mathematics at St. Mary's School in Frankfort. His transition to higher education was facilitated by his participation in a computer contest for high school students, which provided him with valuable connections and led to his recruitment by Herkimer College. Over the years, he has earned a glowing reputation as a faculty member, receiving high rankings based on student opinion surveys — a notable achievement in the field of mathematics. He is particularly proud of his ability to adapt his teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of his students, whether they were pursuing health services or advanced mathematics.

In addition to his administrative and teaching responsibilities, Mr. Oriolo has held significant roles in professional organizations. He serves as treasurer and executive committee member of the New York Association of Chief Academic Officers and is a board member of the Faculty Student Association at Herkimer College, underscoring his commitment to advancing academic leadership and supporting student initiatives.

Mr. Oriolo's own academic background includes a master's degree in math education from the State University of New York at Cortland and a bachelor's degree in math education from Manhattan University. His educational journey was shaped by the influence of a dedicated high school math teacher who inspired him to treat every student with respect and fairness. This philosophy has guided his approach throughout his career, driving him to create an environment where all of his students are valued and supported.

Also known for his civic-minded contributions, Mr. Oriolo is serving as president and board member, and was previously the first vice president of the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce. He is also a past president and board member of the American Lung Association and has contributed as a trustee and finance committee member for his local church. Equally devoted to community service, he has donated to various foundations and fundraisers — particularly those supporting displaced mothers.

Mr. Oriolo's achievements in education have seen him recognized through several prestigious accolades. In 2024, he was inducted into the Genesis Group's Hall of Distinction for Lifetime Achievement in Education during the group's 18th Annual Celebration of Education. He also received the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 1992, highlighting his longstanding dedication to student success and support.

Coming from a family of four boys, Mr. Oriolo credits his father for teaching him the ideals of hands-on problem-solving and perseverance through challenges. Having built his own home alongside his father — handling all aspects of construction from electrical work to plumbing — he enjoys repairing and fixing small issues for his family, engaging in photography and exploring his artistic side. Happily married for more than 50 years and a proud father himself, he is deeply involved in the lives of his three daughters and six grandchildren, often assisting with their daily activities and projects.

Looking toward the future, Mr. Oriolo is focused on addressing the challenges facing higher education, including funding constraints and declining enrollment among traditional high school graduates. To counteract these trends, he is actively involved in initiatives such as the State University of New York Reconnect Program, which supports adult learners in modern high-demand fields like cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. He will continue contributing his expertise and innovative ideas to the field of education. He remains committed to fostering collaboration, supporting student success and inspiring others through his energetic and solution-oriented approach.
