As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A pioneer in the field of high school sports reporting and recordkeeping, Mr. Huff has established a distinguished career spanning almost 50 years as a sports journalist covering local and national sports. His comprehensive reporting and insightful analysis of the World Series and all-star baseball games have also contributed to the visibility and understanding of major sporting events on a national scale.
From 2000 to 2012, Mr. Huff was involved with ESPN, focusing on high school sports coverage. During this period, he played a pivotal role in elevating the profile of high school athletics through in-depth reporting and expert commentary. His work at ESPN further solidified his reputation as an authority in the field. Between 1975 and 2008, he served as a writer for the National High School Preview published by Street & Smith, a division of Conde Nast. His contributions provided valuable insights into emerging talent and trends within high school sports, influencing both fans and professionals alike.
In 1999, Mr. Huff contributed to Student Sports, where his knowledge of high school athletics enriched the publication's content and reach. He previously held the positions of sports editor and associate sports editor at The Intelligencer, Wheeling Newspapers, for more than 30 years. In these roles, he oversaw editorial direction, mentored aspiring journalists and ensured comprehensive coverage of sporting events throughout the region. He was also a contract columnist for The Intelligencer for more than a decade. His columns offered readers thoughtful perspectives on local and national sports topics, reflecting his deep understanding of the industry.
Prior to his tenure at The Intelligencer, Mr. Huff was the sports editor at the Fairmont Times Newspaper for two years, where he managed sports reporting and editorial content. His early professional experience includes one year on the sports staff at the Morgantown Dominion-News, where he gained foundational skills that would inform his later achievements.
Mr. Huff takes great pride in having compiled high school sports records that were previously unavailable. His efforts were instrumental in the creation of the first national high school sports record book by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Mr. Huff's commitment to his profession is further demonstrated by his active involvement in several industry organizations. He has been an active member of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association since 1965 and has served as executive secretary and treasurer for 43 years. Additionally, he has held the same positions for the Victory Awards Dinner organized by the association for 30 years. His service extends to membership on the Hall of Fame Committee for the City of Wheeling for 20 years, as well as board positions with both the Football Writers Association of America and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association for two years each. He is also a retired member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and serves on The Morgan Wootten Award Selection Committee for the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Huff's academic background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in journalism with a minor in English from West Virginia University School of Journalism in Morgantown in 1969. Inspired from an early age by his father—a postman and avid sports fan—and by James Fair, author of "Give Him to the Angels: The Story of Harry Greb," Mr. Huff developed a passion for sports writing during his youth in New Martinsville. By age 13, he was contributing articles to his hometown's weekly newspaper while maintaining detailed statistics for various sports throughout high school. His dedication earned him a tuition-free scholarship from West Virginia University's sports information department, where he worked during his studies and served as sports editor for the university's daily newspaper.
Mr. Huff's creative output includes authoring "Sports in West Virginia: A Pictorial History," published by Donning Company in 1979, and co-authoring "How to Watch Sports on TV...And Enjoy It" in 1972. Reed Award from West Virginia University School of Journalism in 1999, induction into both the Wheeling Hall of Fame and the National High School Sports Hall of Fame and nine West Virginia Sports Writer of the Year Awards from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Born in New Martinsville, West Virginia, Mr. Huff enjoys spending time with family, including his son and daughter. He also volunteers as a curator for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Sports Museum at WesBanco Arena, a position he has held since 2004.
