He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Idaho in Moscow in 1984 and also holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Montana State University in Bozeman, which provided a strong foundation for his work as an engineer and informed his approach to problem-solving throughout his career.

Since 1996, he has been a singer with the Palouse Choral Society, contributing to community enrichment through performance arts. He is also involved as a musician and singer with both the Lewis Clark Community Concert Band and the Community Band of the Palouse, further showcasing his dedication to cultural initiatives.

In his personal life, Mr. Alstad finds fulfillment participating in musical groups, singing and playing the tuba.
