Transitioning to the private sector, Mr. Newbern entered the telecommunications industry in 2000, joining AT&T as a telecommunication specialist in the Special Access Remote Test System and REACT Remote Testing division. In this capacity from 2000 to 2003, he was responsible for the remote testing and troubleshooting of high-speed fiber circuits, gaining firsthand experience with evolving communication technologies, including SONET rings and optical carriers.
From 2003 to 2008, Mr. Newbern advanced to the Circuit Provisioning Center–Loop Assign Center at AT&T, where he continued to serve as a telecommunications specialist. Here, he played a pivotal role in provisioning and maintaining critical network circuits, further honing his technical and problem-solving skills.
Between 2008 and 2011, he contributed to the Engineering Work Orders division as a telecommunication specialist, where he managed complex engineering projects and ensured seamless integration of new technologies into existing infrastructure.
Mr. Newbern's expertise led to his appointment as a technical associate in network engineering and operations at AT&T from 2011 to 2019. In this role, he played a crucial part in ensuring network reliability and performance, utilizing his in-depth knowledge of subnetworking and fiber optic systems.
From 2019 to 2021, he served as a communication technician toll within network engineering and operations, where he was responsible for maintaining and repairing high-capacity communication links. His ability to simplify highly technical concepts for non-specialists distinguished him as a leader and mentor within the organization.
Elevated to network services manager in network engineering and operations at AT&T from 2021 to 2023, Mr. Newbern specialized in remote testing for high-speed fiber circuits, primarily within the wireless sector. His responsibilities included building and repairing circuits remotely, performing hands-on work in central offices, running fiber jumpers, performing rack and stack operations, and installing and maintaining equipment. Over his 23-year tenure at AT&T, he witnessed and contributed to the evolution of telecommunications technology, maintaining connectivity between individuals utilizing the latest advancements, a professional achievement he regards as his most notable.
Following his retirement from AT&T, Mr. Newbern began working as a freelance information technology consultant in 2024, with a focus on constructing data centers. He addresses the unique challenges faced by modern data centers, drawing on his extensive experience in energy backup power, batteries, diesel generators, networking, trans-Pacific and transcontinental fiber, as well as sales of power, base stations and controllers known as E-Nodes. Weekly, he actively seeks consulting opportunities, engaging in discussions that span a broad range of technical topics.
Mr. Newbern's professional affiliations include membership in the Black Masters of Business Administration and the National Society of Black Engineers, reflecting his commitment to professional development and diversity within the engineering community. He is also recognized for his expertise in Cisco-certified networking and his ability to explain complex scientific principles, such as the relationship between light, electricity and sound, to diverse audiences.
His academic background has played a crucial role in shaping his career. Mr. Newbern earned a Master of Business Administration from Ohio Dominican University, which provided him with advanced business acumen and leadership skills. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in electronic engineering technology with a minor in industrial automation from Bryant & Stratton College, where he developed a strong foundation in electronics and automation. Additionally, he is certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt by Villanova University, equipping him with expertise in process improvement and quality management.
Mr. Newbern's curiosity and confidence have been central to his success. At age twelve, a formative experience repairing a family television sparked his lifelong interest in electronics. Guided by a helpful Radio Shack salesman, he learned the basics of soldering and component repair, an early lesson that inspired his pursuit of a technical career.
