SELDEN, NY, December 03, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Shayla Clarke has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Clarke has established herself as a dedicated expert in emergency recovery and federal funding, currently serving as the Senior Emergency Manager for Planning, Continuity, and Recovery at Stony Brook University since 2024. In this capacity, she is responsible for developing and implementing the university's Business Continuity Program, managing federally declared disaster recovery projects, and planning major institutional events, such as commencement and graduation week. Ms. Clarke's contributions to the field have been recognized by her alma mater in 2022 through their 10 Under 10 Recognition Award. This program recognizes ten graduates from the past decade who have already made significant contributions in their fields and communities. During the 2025 staff retreat, Ms. Clarke's contributions to Stony Brook University's preparedness and resilience were recognized.
In addition to her primary responsibilities at Stony Brook University, Ms. Clarke further extends her impact in academia as an adjunct professor at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, where she shares her professional experiences and insights with students pursuing careers in Emergency Management and related fields.
Before her current roles, Ms. Clarke served as Director of Emergency Recovery at the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management. In this position, she led critical recovery initiatives and coordinated efforts to restore essential services following emergencies. From 2021 to 2023, she served as a Senior Budget Examiner at the Office of Management and Budget in Nassau County, where she managed disaster recovery-related finances. Ms. Clarke's earlier experience includes her tenure at Ardurra in Nassau County, New York, where she held several positions from 2018 to 2021. She began as a Senior Administrative Assistant in 2018 to 2019, a role she credits as foundational to her career development. She emphasizes that starting her professional journey in an administrative capacity provided invaluable exposure to organizational operations and decision-making processes. Her dedication and work ethic led to subsequent promotions, including Disaster Recovery Specialist and Financial Lead from 2020 to 2021, Disaster Recovery Specialist and Deputy Program Manager in 2021, and Disaster Recovery Specialist and Program Coordinator from 2019 to 2021.
Ms. Clarke gained early exposure to emergency management as an intern with the American Red Cross Greater New York in Mineola in 2016 through Adelphi University's Jagger Community Fellows program. She was selected to participate in this prestigious program in 2015, where she interned at Island Harvest, serving as the Summer Food Services Program Documentation Specialist. During this role, she learned and reiterated the importance of proper documentation for grant purposes, a lesson that would remain with her throughout her career.
Ms. Clarke's commitment to service is further reflected in her earlier positions held during her tenure at Adelphi University.
Throughout her career, Ms. Clarke has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS), the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), and the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS). These affiliations have provided her with opportunities for professional development and networking within the field.
Ms. Clarke's academic achievements have played a pivotal role in her professional success. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Professional Studies in Homeland Security at St. John's University. She completed all doctoral coursework with a notable GPA of 3.9. She successfully defended her dissertation proposal by writing the first three chapters of her dissertation while balancing her professional responsibilities, a milestone she considers her most significant achievement.
She earned a Master of Science in Emergency Management from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, in 2019. Her undergraduate studies culminated in a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Adelphi University in 2016. These academic credentials have provided her with a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical application within her field.
Ms. Clarke holds several professional certifications that underscore her expertise. She is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), certified through the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) in 2024. She completed the National Emergency Management Basic Academy (NEMBA) through FEMA in 2024 and earned an Infrastructure Disaster Management certificate from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service in 2021. Additionally, she holds an advanced certificate from Hofstra University's Environmental Sustainability Certificate Program.
Ms. Clarke attributes her success to her determination and passion for making a difference and helping others. Her initial interest in criminal justice was sparked by her 7th-grade science class, where they learned about crime scene investigation tactics, and the exam was to process a scene. The passion for Homeland Security was sparked by the Sociology of Terrorism course taken in her senior year of undergrad. While attending a Careers in Criminal Justice event that semester, she met the Director of the Emergency Management Program, who introduced her to various tracks within the field. The Emergency Management program with the Homeland Security Track ultimately inspired her to enroll in the program at Adelphi and ultimately in the Homeland Security doctoral program at St. John's.
Beyond her professional and academic pursuits, Ms. Clarke is actively involved in civic organizations. She has served on the Institutional Review Board Committee at Nassau University Medical Center since 2023 and as the vice chair of the Student Affairs Advisory Board at Adelphi University since 2021. She has been a volunteer officer with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps since 2019 and a board member of the Women's Giving Circle at Adelphi University since 2019.
