Dr. Levenson has established a long and successful career in higher education, marked by her expertise in communication studies and acting. Affiliated with the City University of New York (CUNY) for over 15 years, she has been an assistant professor on campus, teaching courses in communication studies, acting, theater, and other subjects since 2008. In 2010, Dr. Levenson also became an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies on campus, where she has contributed to the academic and personal growth of her students, fostering effective communication and building meaningful relationships in the classroom. She is also an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Communication Studies at Baruch College, CUNY.
Before her tenure at CUNY, Dr. Levenson excelled in the classroom as an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Oklahoma City University from 2007 to 2008. During this period, she expanded her pedagogical approach and refined her expertise in the field. Dr. Levenson's career in academia began previously at New York University (NYU), where she spent 10 years as a fellow and adjunct professor. This decade-long experience, which began in 1996, provided her with valuable insights into higher education, enabling her to engage with diverse student populations while developing innovative teaching methods. During her tenure at NYU, Dr. Levenson taught courses in many areas of communication, notably in public speaking.
Dr. Levenson's academic background has played a pivotal role in shaping her professional journey. Following her undergraduate work, she earned a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of California, Riverside, enhancing her expertise in acting and performance. Dr. Levenson also earned a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University (NYU) in Music and Performing Arts, which equipped her with advanced research skills and theoretical knowledge essential for her work in theatre and communication studies.
Throughout her career, Dr. Levenson has been recognized for her achievements and professional affiliations. She is a member of SAG-AFTRA, Actors' Equity, the Institute of General Semantics, the Media Ecology Association, NYSCA (NY State Communication Association) and NCA (National Communication Association) reflecting her active engagement with industry organizations relevant to her areas of specialization.
Among Dr. Levenson's most significant accomplishments was the publication of her book "Acting Chekhov in Translation," released by Peter Lang in 2019. The book features insights from over 100 individuals with whom she engaged on topics such as translation, stage translation and acting. Dr. Levenson considers this publication her most significant achievement, particularly given the challenges she faced in balancing an intensive teaching schedule with writing pursuits earlier in her career, and many generous reviews of her book. In addition to her scholarly contributions, Dr. Levenson remains committed to advancing the field through ongoing projects and other publications that reflect both depth and innovation.
Dr. Levenson values the relationships she builds with students and colleagues alike. Looking ahead, she intends to continue to prioritize the success and well-being of her students. She also aspires to author a second book, potentially a novel.
