Mr. Toia has established a distinguished career, drawing on decades of expertise in bio-instrumentation and technical writing. Since 2018, he has been retired, following a prolific period as a technical writer for Indotronix International Corporation from 2009 to 2018. During this time, Mr. Toia contributed to the development and refinement of technical documentation, leveraging his scientific background to ensure clarity and precision.
From 2016 to 2017, Mr. Toia served as a technical writer and editor at Atos IT Solutions and Services A/S, where he was responsible for producing and editing complex technical materials. Between 2012 and 2015, he held the role of technical writer and document controller at Atos IT Solutions, further honing his skills in managing critical documentation processes.
In 2011, Mr. Toia worked as a technical writer for Ascendum Solutions and also as a technical writer and editor in training development and solutions group at Kroger. That same year, he was a documentation analyst at Siemens IT Solutions and Services, where he supported the creation and maintenance of essential business documents.
Mr. Toia's tenure at Procter & Gamble from 1994 to 2008 marked a significant chapter in his professional journey. As clinical systems support manager and principal researcher, he played an integral role in pharmaceutical research initiatives. From 1997 to 2001, he was also a business application specialist and a senior research associate within the company's pharmaceutical division. His work contributed to advancements in clinical data management and research methodologies.
Prior to his time at Procter & Gamble, Mr. Toia served as an associate director of research data at Duramed Pharmaceuticals from 1993 to 1994. In this capacity, he oversaw research data operations until organizational restructuring led to the elimination of mid-level director positions. From 1989 to 1993, he served as a research data analyst in clinical data management at Marion Merrell Dow Inc., where he managed pharmaceutical clinical trial research data until the company's relocation prompted his departure.
Mr. Toia's earlier experience includes working as an analyst in the organics laboratory at Howard Laboratories Inc. from 1988 to 1989, where he conducted environmental testing analyses. In 1987, Mr. Toia held a year-long post as a research biologist in the growth factor laboratory at the Hipple Cancer Research Center, contributing to nonprofit cancer research efforts until budgetary constraints led to staff reductions.
From 1972 to 1986, Mr. Toia was a research assistant in the symbiotic nitrogen fixation laboratory at Charles F. Kettering Research Laboratory. There, he conducted biological bench research funded by government grants and the Kettering Foundation until the facility closed due to funding withdrawal. Concurrently, between 1980 and 1985, he served as a part-time instructor at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, sharing his knowledge with students while maintaining his primary research responsibilities.
A significant milestone in Mr. Toia's career is the establishment of the Robert E. and Kathleen Toia Scholarship Fund at the University of Dayton, which was created more than 10 years ago. This initiative reflects his enduring commitment to education and his desire to give back to future generations of students who share his alma mater. Over the years, Mr. Toia has taken pride in following the accomplishments of the scholarship recipients, including the first recipient, who is now a pediatrician at the Cleveland Clinic.
Mr. Toia's academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, earned in 1969. He continued at the University of Dayton to complete a Master of Science in biology with concentrations in plant and cell physiology and bio-instrumentation in 1971. Furthering his expertise, Mr. Toia pursued advanced graduate coursework in botany at Miami University from 1973 to 1975.
Throughout his career, Mr. Toia has demonstrated exceptional commitment to scientific advancement. He is particularly proud of his contributions as author or co-author on numerous peer-reviewed journal articles — totaling 15 full-scale publications — and eight peer-reviewed abstracts in scientific journals. He delivered four scientific presentations at national or international conferences, underscoring his prominence within the scientific community.
Mr. Toia's scholarly contributions include co-authoring several influential scientific publications, notably "Sporocarps of Azolla mexicana Presl. I. Isolation and Purification of Megasporocarps and Mirosporangia" in New Phytologist in 1987, among others. His work spans plant physiology, symbiosis, nitrogen fixation, photosynthesis, morphology and biochemistry, demonstrating both breadth and depth across multiple disciplines. Notably, Mr. Toia has been formally recognized by Beta Beta Beta (Biology Honor Society), reflecting his excellence within biological sciences.
Initially aspiring to teach high school biology after graduation, Mr. Toia shifted his focus to a career in biological research. His passion for teaching remained a hallmark of his career, reflected in ongoing mentorship and support for student development.
Mr. Toia's civic engagement is extensive. Since 2006, he has volunteered as an information technology consultant for ArbGeeks and has served as newsletter author, editor and school tour guide for Five Rivers MetroParks. From 2016 to 2021, he served on the board of directors for Common Bond while also volunteering at local memory care facilities.
Over the past decade and a half, personal experiences have inspired Mr. Toia's advocacy for Alzheimer's patients and caregivers. Drawing on firsthand caregiving experience, he has become dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by caregivers, volunteering regularly at local memory care facilities within his community.
Born in Pittsburgh, Mr. Toia enjoys landscaping, gardening, nature hikes, visits to local parks, small-scale woodworking, puzzles and painting. Looking ahead, he plans to continue his commitment to advocating for individuals affected by Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, as well as supporting their caregivers by sharing his experiences, lessons learned and resource opportunities.
