Dr. Shih-Ping Kao is a nuclear engineer with more than 40 years of expertise in nuclear reactor design and safety analysis. Born in Taiwan to a military family, he spent his childhood in Seoul before transferring to a high school in the United States, where his older brother was in college. His interest in nuclear technology grew out of his observations of the global energy crisis, and he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering, with highest honors, in 1979. He was awarded a master's degree and a PhD in nuclear engineering by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the mid-1980s with a Charles Stark Draper fellowship.
