PITTSBURGH, PA, December 22, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- David J. Allstot, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Allstot was born in Brookings, South Dakota, into a large and industrious family rooted in the farming communities of the Midwest. His father, the eldest of 10 children, and his mother, the second-youngest of 12, both experienced the challenges of rural life during times of economic hardship and health adversity. Despite limited formal education, Dr. Allstot's parents instilled in him the values of perseverance, honesty and a deep respect for learning, principles that have guided his personal and professional journey.
Dr. Allstot's distinguished career spans more than four decades and is marked by significant contributions to academia, research and industry. Since 2023, he has served as a Distinguished Special Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In this capacity, he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses, advises and mentors students, conducts pioneering research in analog and radio-frequency integrated circuits, and integrates artificial intelligence techniques into research projects. He also leads collaborations between industry and academia.
From 2017 to 2023, Dr. Allstot was a professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis. There, he continued to advance the field of analog and RF integrated circuits while guiding students at all levels. His leadership extended beyond the classroom as he fostered connections among alums and contributed to the university's research profile.
Between 2013 and 2016, Dr. Allstot held the role of MacKay Professor in residence and executive director at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. He directed innovative research efforts in wireless technology and mentored emerging scholars in one of the nation's premier engineering environments.
In 2012, Dr. Allstot was a Visiting Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he contributed his expertise to both teaching and collaborative research projects.
From 1999 to 2012, Dr. Allstot served as the Boeing-Egtvedt Chair Professor of Engineering and Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington in Seattle. Under his leadership, the department achieved new heights in research output and academic excellence.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Allstot was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he began shaping future leaders in electrical engineering through rigorous instruction and mentorship.
Dr. Allstot's professional journey began as an integrated circuit design engineer at Tektronix Inc. in Beaverton, Oregon. This foundational experience provided him with groundbreaking insights into circuit design that would inform his later academic pursuits.
Throughout his career, Dr. Allstot has established himself as an expert in analog integrated circuits and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor analog design. His technical mastery has been recognized by peers worldwide, earning him membership in the National Academy of Engineering and designation as a Life Fellow of IEEE.
A hallmark of Dr. Allstot's legacy is his profound impact on students. Over his career, he has advised approximately 125 graduate students—including about 75 master's students and 50 doctoral candidates—providing not only academic guidance but also financial support and lifelong mentorship. More than 20 of his former students have become professors themselves, collectively teaching over 100,000 students and earning more than 70 teaching awards. Many others have assumed leadership roles within industry giants such as Amazon, Nvidia and Samsung or have pioneered new ventures internationally. In recognition of his influence, former students raised $1.5 million to establish the Vickie and David Allstot Fellowship Fund at UC Berkeley, a testament to their gratitude for his mentorship and the educational benefits from the great Berkeley Professors.
Dr. Allstot's educational background laid a strong foundation for his achievements. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979; a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oregon State University in 1974; and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science from the University of Portland in 1969. These academic accomplishments equipped him with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for innovation in integrated circuit design and great role models for teaching.
His motivation to enter this field was deeply personal: witnessing his father's struggle with hearing loss which had forced him to drop out of high school inspired him to pursue advances in hearing-aid technology. This goal combined compassion with technical curiosity. His parents' encouragement to value education, despite their own limited opportunities, further fueled his dedication to teaching and mentoring others.
Dr. Allstot's commitment extends beyond academia through involvement with civic-minded organizations and philanthropic initiatives such as the Vickie and David Allstot Fellowship Fund at UC Berkeley. His professional excellence has been recognized with numerous honors including the Meritorious Service Award from IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (2019), Choma Award (2018), Best Paper Award (2015), Van Valkenburg Award (2011), Darlington Best Paper Award (1995, 2010), Desoer Award (2004), University Research Award from Semiconductor Industry Association (2008), Aristotle Award from Semiconductor Research Corporation (2005), Beatrice Winner Award at IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (1998) and IEEE Baker Prize Paper Award (1980).
Outside his professional endeavors, Dr. Allstot enjoys working outdoors on his property, walking his dog daily, fishing annually in Alaska and spending time with friends and family, including maintaining close connections with former students through an active alum network.
Looking ahead, Dr. Allstot remains dedicated to teaching, mentoring future engineers, advancing research in his field, and supporting academic leadership initiatives that will shape the next generation of innovators in technology.
