Mr. Heilmeier began his law enforcement career in 2011 as a police officer at Summa Health in Akron, Ohio. From 2013 to 2016, he served as a field training officer, mentoring new recruits and ensuring operational excellence. He advanced to detective in 2016, investigating complex cases within the healthcare environment, and continued in this role until 2019. From 2019 to 2022, he contributed as a part-time detective while expanding his responsibilities elsewhere.

In 2017, Mr. Heilmeier began shaping future law enforcement professionals as a basic police academy instructor at The University of Akron, a role he continues to hold today.

His tenure at Akron Children's Hospital began in 2019 as an investigator, where he honed skills in sensitive, high-stakes environments. By 2020, he was promoted to police lieutenant, leading hospital-based policing initiatives with a focus on mental health and community partnerships. Since 2021, he has served as Patrol Lieutenant, overseeing patrol operations for the Akron Bureau, supervising sergeants and officers, and ensuring adherence to best practices in investigations, arrests, and use-of-force reviews. As well as, leading the K9 Unit and Behavioral health Response Against Violence Escalation (B.R.A.V.E.) unit.

In 2025, Mr. Heilmeier expanded his influence statewide as a marketing liaison for Lexipol, leveraging his expertise to support agencies in implementing law enforcement tools and resources to help with Policy Management, Training, Field Training, Officer Wellness, and much more.

Notable Achievements
A highlight of his career came in 2022 when the BRAVE program earned the Ohio CIT Program of the Year award, underscoring his leadership in mental health crisis response. His contributions have also been recognized with the Law Enforcement Ambassador of the Year award (2019) and YMCA Volunteer of the Year (2017).

Education and Professional Development
Mr. Heilmeier earned a bachelor's degree in political science, criminal justice, and sociology from The University of Akron in 2010. He has pursued advanced leadership training, completing the FBI Great Lakes Leadership Seminar (2024) and earning the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy credential (2021). He is certified as an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy instructor (2017) and holds designation as a master criminal investigator (2016).

Community Engagement
Beyond his professional duties, Mr. Heilmeier serves on the board of directors for Hope & Healing Survivor Resource Center (since 2018) and the advisory board for Akron Area YMCA (since 2017). His civic involvement reflects his dedication to strengthening community resources and partnerships.
