COLUMBIA, SC, January 14, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Evelyn Cohens has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Cohens has led a distinguished career of more than 30 years in the education sector. Currently serving as Chair of the Division of General Studies Program at Morris College, she supervises and evaluates general education instructors, oversees the developmental studies program, advises freshman and sophomore level students, assists with pre-registration and registration processes, attends professional development workshops and participates in conferences. Her leadership and dedication to student success saw her presented with the Outstanding Educator Award from the Mary McLeod Bethune National Council of Negro Women in 2025.
Prior to her tenure at Morris College, Dr. Cohens dedicated three decades as an elementary school principal within Richland County School District One. During this period, she made her most notable impact by working with elementary students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Through her leadership, she significantly improved their academic performance and fostered strong relationships throughout the community, achievements that remain a source of great pride in her career.
Before assuming the principalship, Dr. Cohens served for three years as an elementary guidance counselor, where she provided critical support to students navigating both academic and personal challenges. Her early career also includes three years as a professor at the University of South Carolina Upstate and two years as a professor at Voorhees College, where she contributed to the academic development of numerous undergraduate students.
In addition to her primary roles, Dr. Cohens is actively involved in institutional governance and advocacy at the college. She serves on the administrative committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and advises the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) student club. On the state level, she maintains an ongoing engagement with educational leadership through continued affiliation with the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.
Hailing from a low to moderate income family background, Dr. Cohens became the first member of her family to attend college. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from the University of South Carolina, which laid the foundation for her empathetic approach to student support. Though she initially considered the field of business administration, she shifted her focus to sociology out of a desire to help others — a decision that continues to inform her work with students facing academic challenges.
Dr. Cohens furthered her education at the University of South Carolina with dual master's degrees — the first in vocational rehabilitation counseling and the second in reading education — as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in reading education. Her advanced studies equipped her with specialized knowledge that has been vital in supporting underprepared students and providing professional guidance for public school teachers.
Beyond her work in academia, Dr. Cohens is actively involved with civic organizations as a volunteer with the Harvest Hope Food Bank and Oliver Gospel Mission. She is also a member of the Trustus Theatre in Columbia, which supports and collaborates with artists who create innovative and inclusive theatrical works. Additionally, she contributes monetarily to the American Cancer Society, National Alzheimer's Association, Feed the Children Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and Operation Smile demonstrating a passionate commitment to community welfare.
In her personal life, Dr. Cohens enjoys traveling, volunteering, helping families during the holiday season and attending concerts and theater performances. Looking toward the future, she plans to apply for a full professorship and seeks to expand her consulting work, writing endeavors and professional presentations. Her life and career reflect a longstanding dedication to educational advancement, community engagement and helping those in need through everything she does.
