Mr. Montgomery is a well-established figure in the education and policy advocacy sector in Washington, DC. As the dean of students and culture at Harmony DC PCS since 2022, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the school's climate and supporting student development. In this capacity, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to policy advocacy, particularly through his involvement with EmpowerEd, a nonprofit organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of teachers in policymaking. Mr. Montgomery has also made significant contributions by supporting community schools and other initiatives across the district, actively working to secure funding for experiential learning and collaborating to provide teachers with essential resources.
Before progressing to his current position, Mr. Montgomery served as a reading interventionist for kindergarten through second grade and as the English language arts department chairperson at Harmony DC PCS from 2018 to 2022. During this period, he focused on literacy development and departmental leadership, furthering the academic success of young learners. From 2017 to 2018, Mr. Montgomery taught third and fourth-grade mathematics and science at Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys, where his work was grounded in fostering foundational skills in STEM subjects among elementary students.
In 2015, Mr. Montgomery was the founding pre-kindergarten teacher at DC Prep's Anacostia Campus, where he contributed to the establishment of early childhood education programs and supported the school's mission to prepare students for long-term academic achievement through 2017. His earlier experience includes teaching first grade at Friendship Public Charter School from 2013 to 2015 and at Center City Public Charter Schools from 2011 to 2013. In these roles, Mr. Montgomery was proud to advance instructional strategies that featured adaptability to meet young learners' needs.
Mr. Montgomery initiated his career as an educator as a first-grade co-teacher through the Capital Teaching Residency at KIPP DC during the 2010–2011 academic year. This formative experience provided him with hands-on training in classroom management and instructional best practices. Before entering the classroom full-time, he thrived as a tutor, mentor and teacher in training with Match Education in Boston from 2009 to 2010, where he supported students' academic growth while developing his own pedagogical skills.
In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Montgomery is affiliated with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, where he has served on the School Leader Advisory Council since 2024. He also pursues opportunities for civic engagement and started serving as a class ambassador for Canterbury School in 2025 and as an educator organizing fellow with EmpowerEd in 2024. Mr. Montgomery's keen focus on educational equity is further evidenced by his recognition as a Policy Advisor Fellow by Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE) in 2025. Through his work with LEE, Mr. Montgomery served as a Policy Advisor to a member of the Prince George's County Board of Education.
A passion for continuous learning drove Mr. Montgomery to achieve academic excellence. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Oberlin College and Conservatory in 2007, after which he pursued graduate studies. He now holds a Master of Education in educational leadership and policy from American University, earned in 2024. Notably, Mr. Montgomery has enhanced his expertise by securing and pursuing specialized credentials. He is currently pursuing a certificate in antiracist administration, supervision and leadership from American University and received a nonprofit management executive certificate from McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University in 2025.
Apart from his career achievements, Mr. Montgomery enjoys writing poetry as well as engaging in arts and crafts, including drawing and painting. Looking toward the future, he will pursue a doctorate in education with the intention of expanding his policy work within the Washington, DC area, and he is committed to advancing advocacy efforts that emphasize the role of community schools in reducing crime and improving academic outcomes. Additionally, Mr. Montgomery hopes to establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the District while creating valuable resources for educators.
