PROVIDENCE, RI, January 21, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Peter H. Borgemeister has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With a particular focus on historic preservation, adaptive reuse and the development of low and moderate income housing, Mr. Borgemeister has had an impactful career spanning five decades. Most recently, from 2000 to 2024, he worked as Peter Borgemeister, Architect in Providence, where he designed adaptive reuse and preservation projects, managed architectural restoration and renovation efforts and consulted on affordable housing development.
In addition to restoring some Rhode Island's iconic structures — including the Narragansett Towers, the Beneficent Congressional Church and the Beavertail Lighthouse and Museum — Mr. Borgemeister also oversaw project execution and compliance with historic standards, supported the revitalization of Providence neighborhoods and advocated for increased housing opportunities for residents with low and moderate income.
A defining highlight of Mr. Borgemeister's career was his dedicated involvement with Stop Wasting Abandoned Property (SWAP Inc.) during the early 1980s. Living in a distressed neighborhood in Providence at the time, he played an important role in helping SWAP expand its mission to revitalize abandoned properties. The organization negotiated with the city to acquire titles to derelict houses, which were then sold to homesteaders who were willing to renovate them on limited budgets. Through these efforts, more than 200 houses were saved.
Prior to establishing his own practice, Mr. Borgemeister spent more than a decade as an architect with various architectural firms, including a three-year tenure as superintendent of Sega Construction. During this period, he further developed his expertise in historic preservation and adaptive reuse while contributing to numerous restoration projects and nonprofit initiatives across the region.
Earlier in his professional journey, Mr. Borgemeister gained hands-on experience as a housing rehabilitation specialist at Providence Preservation Society Revolving Fund from 1983 to 1986 and as a skilled finish carpenter from 1970 to 1983. This practical background provided him with invaluable insight into construction techniques and craftsmanship — skills that would later inform his approach as an architect and housing consultant.
Alongside his primary roles, Mr. Borgemeister has made an impact through his memberships with the National Trust for Historic Preservation as well as the Providence Preservation Society, where he served as a past member of the Board of Trustees and sat on the Planning and Architectural Review Committee.
Mr. Borgemeister is a member of Amicable Congregational Church in Tiverton, Rhode Island and enjoys singing in the choir. His dedication to enhancing his community extends into volunteer efforts and support for various preservation initiatives.
Mr. Borgemeister earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design in 1986. The training he received equipped him with both the technical knowledge and creative vision essential for success in architecture. A licensed architect in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, he has successfully practiced across state lines while upholding his rigorous professional standards in every project he undertakes.
Mr. Borgemeister attributes his achievements to the innate talent for drawing and architecture that he has cultivated since childhood, as well as the privilege of receiving a quality education and maintaining a longstanding dedication to his craft. His initial interest in architectural drawing led him through formal studies at Pomfret School and later Rhode Island School of Design; while taking a hiatus from college, he began his work as a carpenter before returning to complete his studies and pursue licensure.
Throughout his career, Mr. Borgemeister has received numerous awards recognizing his impact on historic preservation and community revitalization. In honor of his restoration work on the Beavertail Lighthouse and Museum, he was presented with the Rhody Award from Preserve Rhode Island in 2010. He was also recognized with the 30th Anniversary Benefactor Award from SWAP in 2006 and inducted into the 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame by the Providence Preservation Society the same year. Earlier on, he was honored with the Historic Preservation Award from the Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission of the State of Rhode Island in 1995 and recognized as a Rhode Island 350 Honoree in 1986.
Having successfully served in architecture and historic preservation for more than five decades, Mr. Borgemeister is working on a book on house renovation and restoration while hoping to return to stone carving and sculpture as personal artistic pursuits. His life and legacy are defined by lifelong dedication to architectural excellence, community revitalization and advocacy for affordable housing — qualities that have left a mark on the State of Rhode Island and beyond.
