David W. Stoller, MD, FACR has established a distinguished career in orthopaedic and sports medicine imaging, marked by more than three decades of expertise and leadership. Dr. Stoller is regarded as a luminary in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the joints and sports-related injuries.
Dr. Stoller graduated from Stanford University with an A.B. and Honors Degree in Human Biology in 1978. He graduated from the UCLA School of Medicine in 1982 and completed a Surgical Internship at the University of Chicago in 1983. Dr. Stoller's Radiology Residency was completed at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 1986 and his Fellowship in Skeletal Radiology at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1987, with teaching appointment as Volunteer Clinical Professor of Radiology.
Dr. Stoller currently holds the position and title of National Director of Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Imaging for RadNet, Inc; Medical Director of Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Imaging for Beverly Radiology—Northern California, and Director of the Stoller/RadNet —Northern California Fellowship Program. Dr. Stoller is an affiliate member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society (ASES).
Dr. Stoller is the author of eleven textbooks, including MRI in Orthopaedics and Rheumatology; MRI, Arthroscopy, and Surgical Anatomy of the Joints; Pocket Radiologist Orthopaedics; Diagnostic Imaging Orthopaedics; Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine (now in its 3rd edition); Stoller's Atlas of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine; Stoller's Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine: The Shoulder (2015), Stoller's Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine: The Knee (2017); Stoller's Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine: The Hip (2018), which have been translated in various languages, including Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Mandarin. Dr. Stoller's DVDs with Primal Pictures of London include the Interactive Shoulder, Hip, Ankle, Foot, and Knee, which won First Place for British Medical Association Awards Best Electronic Publication. Dr. Stoller also developed the 'Virtual Radiology Fellowship (VRF)' as an online training program for radiologists.
Dr. Stoller has contributed to the development of evidence-based imaging guidelines, serving on Expert Panels for the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria for Acute Shoulder Pain and Acute Knee Trauma. These guidelines established standards for appropriate imaging utilization in orthopaedic conditions. Dr. Stoller was appointed and served on the American College of Radiology (ACR) Commission and Committee of Education for a six-year term. Dr. Stoller has reviewed for multiple journals, including American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and the Journal of Hand Surgery.
Dr. Stoller's publications exemplify his expertise in MR arthrography techniques and the correlation between MR findings and arthroscopic pathology, which is essential for preoperative planning in sports medicine. His work has helped establish MRI as the preferred imaging modality for evaluating soft tissue injuries in athletes and has contributed to reducing unnecessary diagnostic arthroscopies in favor of non-invasive MR assessment. Dr. Stoller's radiology publication 'Meniscal tears: pathologic correlation with MR imaging' represented the first scientific publication on the correlation between MRI of the meniscus (knee) and pathologic findings.
Dr. Stoller served as the Musculoskeletal Radiologist for the XXV Olympic Games, Barcelona, Spain 1992. He currently reads for several regional Bay Area professional and collegiate sports teams, including the Athletics baseball team and UC Berkeley California Bears Athletic teams. In 2015, Dr. Stoller was awarded a medal by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his contributions to sports medicine.
Dr. Stoller has conducted, and directed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine lecture seminars and workshops, nationally and internationally, for more than three decades. He has also lectured extensively at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA) programs.
