From 2017 to 2018, Dr. Gonzales worked as a staff accountant at BDO USA PC, performing audits and financial reviews for clients across a range of industries, strengthening his technical proficiency in auditing. He gained early academic experience at the University of North Texas Learning Center, serving as both a supplemental instruction leader and senior supplemental instruction leader from 2013 to 2017, where he provided peer-led academic support. Concurrently, he worked as an assistant in expense accounting at the university in 2016. His initial exposure to public accounting began with an internship at BDO USA PC in 2015.

Dr. Gonzales served honorably in the United States Air Force in Germany from 2008 through 2012, where he was promoted to facility manager specializing in air transportation logistics. For his meritorious service, he received the Air Force Achievement Medal. His military service instilled discipline and created opportunities for higher education. In 2012, he completed coursework in history at the University of Maryland Global Campus and in air transportation logistics at the Community College of the Air Force. He later earned a Master of Science in accounting with a focus on assurance from the University of North Texas in 2017. In 2025, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas at Arlington, where he also received an Outstanding Teacher Award.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gonzales has remained actively engaged in industry-related organizations. He previously served as a junior accountancy board member at the University of North Texas and holds licensure as a certified public accountant in the state of Texas, reflecting his commitment to professional standards and ethical practice.

Dr. Gonzales attributes his success to the strong work ethic instilled by his parents, which emphasized perseverance and humility. As a first-generation high school graduate, he initially did not plan to pursue higher education due to academic challenges. His decision to enlist in the United States Air Force proved transformative, opening pathways for both academic and personal growth.

Following his transition to civilian life, encouragement from a college mentor led Dr. Gonzales to enroll in business courses. Drawing on his experience training others during his military service, he was inspired to pursue teaching full-time and came to view mentorship as central to his academic philosophy. Among those who influenced his development was Jose Lineros at the University of North Texas, whose supportive teaching style left a lasting impression. He also credits Dr. Ramgopal Venkataraman, who served as both his department chair and dissertation chair, for fostering a supportive academic environment and imparting enduring lessons in leadership and scholarly development.

Dr. Gonzales is deeply committed to civic service and has served as both secretary-elect and secretary of The PhD Project Accounting Doctoral Student Association, a national initiative supporting diversity among business doctoral students. He has also coordinated fundraising events for the Denton Animal Shelter Foundation and volunteered with Keep Denton Beautiful and veteran resume workshops.

A published author, Dr. Gonzales released Rob's Race: A Horse Story in 2016, reflecting his creative interests. To maintain balance, he enjoys playing guitar and writing. He is also initiating an intellectual initiative titled The Human Question, which explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, and professional judgment in modern work and learning.
