Most recently, Dr. Merola served as a retired associate professor of orthopedic surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he remains active as an emeritus academic, contributing to the training and mentorship of future surgeons. He also holds an academic medical appointment at Weill Cornell Medical College at NewYork-Presbyterian, furthering his impact on both clinical practice and education.

Since 1996, Dr. Merola has maintained a robust clinical practice, seeing orthopedic spine patients during scheduled office hours on Mondays and select Thursdays, performing surgical procedures primarily on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and select Fridays, and managing comprehensive patient care before, during, and after surgical intervention. His ability to balance clinical consultations with operative responsibilities has been instrumental in delivering high-quality care to diverse patient populations.

Dr. Merola's expertise centers on reconstructive spinal surgery, with a particular focus on treating spinal deformities in pediatric and adult patients. He is highly regarded for addressing complex conditions such as scoliosis, herniated discs and spinal stenosis. His commitment to advancing the field is reflected in his prolific academic output, including approximately 25 to 30 publications and the development of a spinal deformity questionnaire that has significantly improved the assessment and treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Merola began his teaching career in 1996 at both SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and St. Vincent Hospital in Manhattan. In 2010, he expanded his academic influence by joining Weill Cornell at NewYork-Presbyterian. He continues to operate as a practicing surgeon despite retiring from his associate professorship at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Dr. Merola's professional affiliations underscore his leadership within the orthopedic community. He is a fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he served on the spinal surgery guidelines committee. He served two terms as president of the Brooklyn Orthopedic Society and sits on the editorial board for Current Opinion in Orthopedics.

His educational background laid a strong foundation for his achievements. Dr. Merola completed a fellowship in spinal reconstruction at the University of Colorado Denver in 1996, following a residency in orthopedic surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in 1995. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Howard University in 1990 after receiving a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from New York University in 1985. Board-certified by both the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Board of Spine Surgery, Dr. Merola credits his unwavering perseverance as a driving force behind his professional success.

Throughout his career, Dr. Merola has been recognized with numerous honors for his contributions to medicine and research. Among these are repeated selections as one of New York Magazine's Top Doctors from 2007 through 2016 and again from 2021 through 2025, as well as inclusion among Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area from 2016 to 2023. He has received accolades from Schneps Media's Brooklyn Courier Life across multiple years and was named Most Compassionate Doctor by the American Registry. Notably, he was honored with an award from the Scoliosis Research Society and received the prestigious Russell Hibbs, M.D., Award for his research on spinal surgery in children with scoliosis.

Dr. Merola's civic engagement includes donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and volunteer work with the teaching program at Xavier High School in New York City. His leadership extends beyond clinical practice through service on professional committees and societies dedicated to advancing orthopedic care.

Born in Jersey City, Dr. Merola enjoys an active personal life outside medicine, with interests in hiking, skiing and boxing tournaments through training and sparring. He is married to Christine and is the father of Olivia, Nicholas and Christopher.
