Dr. Hundahl's distinguished career in medicine and surgery spans several decades and is marked by influential roles and pioneering achievements. Since 1986, he has served as the co-founder and lifetime director of Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii) in Honolulu. Under Dr. Hundahl's guidance, the organization grew to become the largest nonprofit home health care agency in Hawaii, employing more than 230 staff members and significantly enhancing the quality and convenience of patient care.

From 2002 to 2019, Dr. Hundahl held concurrent appointments as the professor of clinical surgery at the University of California, Davis, and the chief of surgery for the VA Northern California Health Care System within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs between 2002 and 2019. During this period, he was instrumental in developing multiple successful clinical collaborations between the VA and the U.S. Department of Defense, furthering access to advanced surgical care for veterans.

During his initial career in Hawaii, Dr. Hundahl also contributed significantly to medical care, medical education and research. While maintaining an active practice as a busy surgical oncologist in Honolulu, he served as member of the research staff at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii in Honolulu, associate clinical professor of surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and medical director for Queen's Cancer Institute from 2000 to 2002. His leadership extended to hospital administration. He was elected as associate chief of surgery (1993-1995) and then chief of surgery (1994-2000) at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.

Nationally, Dr. Hundahl played a pivotal role in shaping cancer care policy and data management. As chair of the Commission on Cancer from 1998 to 2000, a consortium of approximately 55 cancer organizations across the U.S., he led efforts to unify diverse stakeholders around common goals for cancer treatment standards and data collection. He previously served as the vice chair of both the Commission on Cancer between 1996 and 1998 and the National Cancer Data Committee from 1994 to 1996, as well as a member of the governing council for the National Cancer Database between 1995 and 1999 and the Union Internationale Contre le Cancer's International Cancer Data Base Committee from 1995 to 1998. Dr. Hundahl's work with these organizations included participation in the ongoing development of national cancer databases in the U.S. and internationally. These large data systems use anonymized data for research and quality improvement.

Dr. Hundahl's academic preparations began with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1977, followed by a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1981. After completing a five-year residency in general surgery at the University of Hawaii in 1986, Dr. Hundahl pursued a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, which he completed in 1988. In addition to his formal education, he received board certification from both the American Board of Surgery Inc. and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

In addition to his primary career objectives, Dr. Hundahl has been an active member and leader in numerous professional associations. He has held positions such as trustee and chair-elect with the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association as well as several other leadership positions with the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hundahl is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society and the Pacific Coast Surgical Association. Additional memberships include the International Gastric Cancer Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Sacramento Surgical Society as a member and past president.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Hundahl has demonstrated a strong commitment to civic engagement and service. He has been a lifetime board member for CareResource Hawaii, a non-profit home health care organization he co-founded in 1986. He has also held leadership roles with the American Cancer Society and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hundahl is an active member of The Pacific Club, the St. Botolph Club and the Nantucket Yacht Club.

Dr. Hundahl's scholarly output includes authoring over 60 journal articles and more than 20 book chapters. He has also served as a reviewer for multiple professional journals and was the medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management from 2000 to 2008.

During Dr. Hundahl's professional journey, the medical field has been shaped by significant changes, such as increasingly enhanced precision of treatment, less morbid treatment, and enhanced cancer survival rates, trends he has both witnessed and contributed to. His groundbreaking research in computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer, establishing the Maruyama Index as a surgical quality metric, and the use of adjuvant chemo-radiation to enhance the survival of gastric cancer patients changed patterns of care for this disease.

Dr. Hundahl's contributions have been recognized through numerous awards over the past four decades, beginning with a Hobart Keese Award from Yale University in 1981. Among others, he received the Nishi Award for best paper in gastric cancer from the International Gastric Cancer Association in 2008, the Joan Oettinger Memorial Award from the University of California in 2009, and recognition in Best Doctors in America every year between 1995 and 2020. Dr. Hundahl attributes his success to excellent training, unwavering dedication, and the encouragement of kind inspirational mentors.
